Quiz Show (DVD) ... released 15 June, 2006 at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / This vigorously entertaining film, sharply directed by Robert Redford fr om Paul Attanasio's brilliant screenplay, is based on the game-show scandals of the 1950s, when TV quiz shows were rigged to attract higher ratings and lucrative sponsorships. The fact-based story focuses on the quiz show Twenty-One and popular contestant Charles Van Doren (Ralph Fiennes), a charming, well-bred intellectual who agreed to win the game by using answers supplied by the show's producers. This unfair advantage turned Van Doren into a prototypical media darling at the expense of reigning Twenty-One champion Herbie Stempel (John Turturro, in a bravura performance), a working-class Jewish contestant who, according to the show's sponsors, had worn out his welcome in the public eye. When a congressional investigator (Rob Morrow) catches on to the scam and Stempel blows the whistle on this backstage manipulation, Quiz Show becomes a smart, political exposè about the first generation of television, the corrupting effect of celebrity and success, and the ongoing loss of innocence in American society. Bristling with superior dialogue and energized by an excellent cast including Paul Scofield as Van Doren's morally upstanding father, Quiz Show succeeds as history lesson, intelligent thriller, and morality tale, setting the stage for the countless scandals that would follow in a nation addicted to television. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Now that almost all are taped, edited and shown later they can be manipulated to wring the most drama and interest out of them without actually breaking the rules of the quiz, but in the days when shows were broadcast live the makers sometimes resorted to other measures… When the makers of Twenty One feel that their audience are losing...more

Quiz Show directed by Robert Redford Cast: Charles Van Doren – Ralph Fiennes Richard Goodwin – Rob Morrow (Northern Exposure’s Dr. Fleischmann) Herbert Stempel – John Turturro Quiz Show is set in the fifties and examines the effects the television game show Twenty One had on the lives of a number of people. With television increasing its influence on much of the world’s population, and instant – and fleeting – fame on offer to anyone who cares to subject themselves to fly-on-the-wall docusoaps or reality game shows, this true story seems just as relevant as it ever was. The success of recent programmes ...  Read the complete review

First off, Quiz Show on DVD doesn't have any extras, bonuses, hidden material, trailers, outtakes, biographies, documentaries, or any other material superfluous to the main feature. If Quiz Show were a sportsman, he'd be an Olympic marathon runner. Slide this disc into your player and you're shown the studio intro, followed directly by the film -no animated menu or copyright warnings in seven languages. You might feel a bit hard done by, but it's not all that bad. It was quite liberating watching for the first time - press 'play', watch movie. No need to navigate several layers of options or sit through pointless intros. So long as you didn't ...  Read the complete review
