Rabid (DVD) ... released 06 January, 2003 at Prism Leisure / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL, Widescreen / One of David Cronenberg's most successful early films, Rabid features porn star Marilyn Chambers as a woman who becomes infected with a virus after an operation. As result she grows a kind of phallus with which she penetrates her victims as she sucks their blood and thus the disease spreads rapidly. The film displays all Cronenberg's usual horrified fascination with the human body and its sexual function. Looking back, it can be read as a kind of parable about AIDS, but it works perfectly well as an effective low-budget shocker. On the DVD: the widescreen image on the DVD is acceptable quality, as is the sound. The fairly routine extras consist of excerpts from a TV interview with Cronenberg, lasting about 10 minutes; a collection of stills from the film; some written notes by horror expert Kim Newman that give useful background, though in part reproduce what is said in the interview; full filmographies for Cronenberg and the three principal performers, including a long list of Chambers' porn credits. --Ed Buscombe

Surprisingly though Rose has a boyfriend Hart Read (Frank Moore) who comes away unharmed from both the accident with Rose and virus being unleashed. lol He then spends most of his wasteful time looking for Rose who by halfway through the movie has moved into the city. Anyhow the virus though gets passed around from Rosie to her doctor Dr. Dan Keloid to outside pati...more

Rabid (DVD): Rabid by David Cronenberg (773 words)

If you think Scanners was violent then "Rabid" was that much more violent. This is very graphic film be warned. However since I am a Croneberg I saw the film the film a while back. It still leaves some pretty shocking horror images within you even after the movie reaches it's end. So in that regard Cronenberg does his job and succeeds. David's first pick for this movie, was Sissy Spacek, but she refused to do it. However , this movie wouldn?t have fit her, this part really calls for someone sexy, not that she isnt sexy but this part required a blond bombshell. Enter Marilyn Chambers. Chambers had a long career in porn with her ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Shivers Again Dave? (311 words)

Rating:

David Cronenberg is certainly one of the world's most interesting and colourful directors, always willing to push the boundaries of common taste and decnecy and leave you asking questions when the movie finishes. Rabid isn't exactly one of his best movies, indeed probably oe of his worst and plays rather like a rerun of one of his earlier movies Shivers (aka They Came From Within). Again we explore human sexuality and horror as a plastic surgeon uses a road crash victim as the subject of a his new skin graft experiments. The subject, hardcore porn star Marilyn Chambers, suffers hideous side-effects as the surgery goes wrong and grows a phallus-like organ ...  Read the complete review

Rabid (DVD): Strange (230 words)

This is a very strange film, like most Kronenberg films. The end result is a blood sucking armpit. You have to be a big fan of the cheesy horror movie full of bad acting to like this, I am, and still found this too much, its understandable why this is a budget film and be picked up for a fiver. The story is about a young girl who has a motorcycle accident, badly scarring her. The doctors decide to try a radicle new form of plastic surgeroy to hide scars. Tissue from other parts of her body are used in a skin graph, (nothing new there.) So the girl needs the skin graph on her breast face and arm. As you know, a skin graph will still leave a scar. But the doctors ...  Read the complete review
