I can't understand it! This film has everything that I normally love: a deeply buried family secret; a tormented main character, who gradually unravels; a vaguely indie feel to the film; shaky but arty cinematography; great performances - what went wrong? Why didn't I enjoy Rachel Getting Married? The film has a simple storyline. Kym is a girl with a hidden, but obviously traumatic past. This past, although not immediately apparent to the audience, has driven her into a serious addiction problem - and it has torn her family apart. Kym's sister Rachel is getting married, and Kym is allowed out of rehab for a couple of days to confront her demons, make her peace ... Read the complete review

*film only review* I wasn't too keen to see this film. I don't know why. I think it may have been an apprehension of seeing a film advertised as gritty and human psyche delving, which I normally wouldn't mind, but starring Anne Hathaway? Don't get me wrong, I like Anne Hathaway. 'The Devil Wears Prada' was very good and 'The Princess Diaries' was, um, very pink? But the thought of her playing an affected rehab patient, didn't bode well in my mind. As always, never judge a film by it's cover, or I mean, by it's cast and trailer? (that can't be right?) 'Rachael (or Rachel as the UK posters spell it here) Getting Married' is a film about Kym (Anne ... Read the complete review

Despite the 'chick flick' sounding title Rachel Getting Married is a drama made in 2008. It was directed by the American filmmaker, screenwriter and producer Jonathan Demme. He is famous for directing The Silence of the Lambs. Naturally since then he directed several films such as Philadelphia, Beloved or The Truth About Charlie. The screenplay was written by Jenny Lumet. Anne Hathaway was nominated for Oscar in the category of Actress in a Leading Role. The winner finally was Kate Winslet for The Reader. The classification is 15 years and over. The running time is 114 minutes. Main cast: -------------- Anne Hathaway - Kym (Rachel's ... Read the complete review

Kym (Anne Hathaway) leaves rehab for Rachel her sister's wedding day. Kym is a recovering alcoholic and drug addict and we discover she has a past which she would like to forget about due to a family tragedy caused by her. Rachel (Rosemary DeWitt), has a real dilemma she wants her sister to be a part of her day, but its her day and there is every chance her sarcastic attention seeking sister could ruin the day for everyone. We follow the build up to the wedding and the relationships within the family as they unravel and develop. The film is shot in a mixture of close up, long range and on handheld cameras and feels personal and intrusive but beautifully shot and really ... Read the complete review

Jonathan Demme is a director with a penchant for the cerebral - his 1992 psychological thriller The Silence of the Lambs won all the major Oscar awards including a Best Director win for Demme himself. Rachel Getting Married, however, is an intimate examination of one extremely strained family unit, and achieves the rare honour of evoking sympathy from virtually every single one of the film's characters. Kym (Anne Hathaway) returns home from drug rehab the weekend her sister, Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt), is getting married, which re-opens a lot of emotional scars, reminding the family of a more innocent time. Kym has a secret (that is revealed later in the film) ... Read the complete review
