Advantages: Anne Hathaway in a new role
Disadvantages: Everything else
I thought this film was everything I enjoy...weddings, Anne Hathaway, chick flick and happily ever after....not so much!
The back description doesn't really do the film justice and if it is a despressing, bleak film you are after then look no further. If you are hoping for a nice wedding-y film then look elsewhere.
Starring Anne Hathaway (who usually does girly films) this film shows Kym leaving rehab to attend her sister Rachel's wedding. Slowly (oh so slowly) the plot unravels and we find out about Kym's previous battle with alcohol and drugs which lead to tragedy and her stint in rehab.
There is a scene at the wedding rehearsal which is really painful to watch when everyone goes round the table to say something to the bride and groom and Kym stands up and pulls the attention to herself and apologises for what happened. It is over dramatc and as said before really uncomfortable to watch.
It is an 'alternative' film with an indie spin. The actual premise of the film is quite good bur the filming poorly done and overall I did not enjoy it.
Even the wedding was disappointing. The bride and groom have the wedding at the family home and instead of music to walk up the aisle to they have all the guests sing/chant 'Rachel rachel rachel, Sidney Sidney Sidney, Rachel Rachel, Sidney Sidney, Rachel, Sidney' its truly awful but annoyingly catchy as I couldn't stop humming it. And strangly the bride and attendants were wearng beautiful traditional looking indian dresses but none of them were indian (and I couldn't tell if there was a religious connection) so overall it seemed really out of place in the film.
Anne Hathaway certainly was brave taking on a role so different to her usual pigeon-holed performances (which I actually enjoy). Kym is a drug addict, alcoholic, smoking deviant and she does perfom the part well.
However I would not recommend this film to anyone and don't think I will be watching it again.
If after this review you still want to watch it then it can be purchased for as little as £7 (or as much as £12 in some shops)
Summary: Not a feel good film, actually just not a good film.
