... to good effect at times to show the passage of time with popular songs of the era lending an authentic air. The b/w works very well in my opinion because if you watch real footage of Lamotta fighting and that era it's all black and white. Lamotta himself once said that when he thinks about his boxing career he sees the fights in black and white himself!
