Rancid Aluminium (DVD) ... released 17 July, 2000 at Entertainment in Video / Features of the DVD: Full Screen, PAL / Rancid Aluminium's unlikely hero, leery Liam Gallagher-look-a-like Pete (Rhys Ifans), is wholly unprepared for promotion to head of the family business after his father dies unexpectedly. To make matters worse, no matter how hard he tries he can't impregnate his wife Sarah (Sadie Frost), and believes he's shooting blanks. Unable to handle responsibility, Pete turns to scheming Irish accountant Deeny (Joseph Fiennes) for help, who recommends that the company seek foreign investment to pay off its debts. What Pete doesn't know is that Deeny is trying to do him out of the business and has arranged a "loan" from a Russian Mafia warlord, Mr Kant (Steven Berkoff), whose raven-haired daughter Masha (Tara Fitzgerald) is set on seducing Pete. Given its all-star British cast (which also includes Dani Behr, Keith Allen and Nick Moran) and bestseller source material, Rancid Aluminium must have looked like a sure-fire comedy hit. But first-time director Ed Thomas (better known as a playwright and theatre director) can't seem to keep a handle on the convoluted plot and the laughs are entirely incidental. Ifans's irritating mockney voiceover doesn't help, nor the fact that Tara Fitzgerald's accent keeps slipping between Stalingrad and Sloane Square. Fans of the James Hawes original may get a thrill from seeing his characters come to life, but it's unlikely anyone else will. --Chris Campion

This film is based around Pete Thompson (Rhys Ifans), a playboy who thinks life is easy and has it all due to his dad being a high-flyer, he is forced to review everything he knows when his father dies and he realises he has inherited a company on the verge of bankruptcy. He realises with the help of his friend and accountant that he will have to do business with the Russian Mafia to regain his money and be what he believes he should. Thats basically what the film is supposed to be about, following this, we follow Pete in his misadventure with the Russian Mafia, although thats as clear as I can make this review, find out more in my opinion below: Who's in ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review 100 minutes of hell (186 words)

I was in a bit of a hurry at the video shop and nothing grabbed my attention that I knew of and wanted to see. In the end I plumped for Rancid Aluminium, on the basis of a promising cast (Joseph Fiennes, Keith Allen, Sadie Frost, Tara Fitzgerald) and some quotes such as 'Best British Film of the Year'. I can only assume that no other films were made in Britain this year (2000), as this film was dreadful. The plot was rather unreal and immature and none of the cast gelled at all. Of the big names it was a tough decision as to who's was the worst performance, its between Joseph Fiennes as the Irish (or maybe Scottish) accountant and Tara Fitzgeralds as the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Rancid Aluminium (DVD): Rancid is a good adjective for this film.... (134 words)

I took this film out of the video shop after seeing Shakespeare in Love, so obviously because I number one, thought Joseph Fiennes a good actor and also because I thought he was quite hot! Additionally I normally trust British Films.. Well this film breaks the mould of your Trainspottings, Shallow Graves etc, it is very tedious, unbelievable, the acting is wooden, Josephs Irish accent is well, not Irish at all... although the acting isn't too bad from Fiennes, Ifans and wierdly Danni Behr, who plays a dumb blonde "Essex Girl" type secretary, but Tara Fitzgerald and Sadie Frost are crap, i haven't seen Frost in anything before but the normally talented ...  Read the complete review
