Advantages: Some good twists, Good acting from Gary Sinise
Disadvantages: Poor acting from Mel Gibson, Sometimes predictable
In RANSOM, Mel Gibson and Rene Russo lose their son to a handful of grungy kidnappers in Central Park and spend the rest of the movie trying to get him back. Gibson plays Tom Mullen, a Self-Made Airline Millionaire who's a bit of a publicity hound, and Rene Russo plays the fragile wife. This film has occasional suspence, but I can't help but feel it was a wasted opportunity. From an early point it looked like it had potential, but the plot and suspence is somewhat lost by a sub-standard performance from Mel Gibson. Mullen gets the help of the FBI against the wished of the terrorists, and after a (very predictable) bungled money-drop to pay off the kidknappers he begins to believe that they will kill his son whatever he does. This is where the twist of the film comes. The FBI and Mullen's wife tell him to pay them off, but instead he uses the money to put a price on the kidknappers head, offering a £2million reward to the public. From here on things look like they could be getting better, for the film. But it becomes very quickly all too predictable, and a bad ending is compensated for slightly by the good acting performance of Gary Sinise as the main kidknapper. All in all I give this 3 stars. A good action film but possibly a wasted opportunity.
