Advantages: Some Funny moments, Great Cast
Disadvantages: Not funny enough, Wasted cats, Too many silly moments
Rat Race is the new crazy comedy by director Jerry Zucker. It has an all star cast including the likes of John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson and Cuba Gooding Jnr. For that reason you would expect a classic comedy but I am afraid to say that sadly you will be disappointed. Read on to find out why. The Story for this movie is pretty simple. Firstly we are introduced to various different characters : A embarrassed American Football referee (Cuba Gooding Jr): This character is the laughing stock of america as he made a mistake whilst refereeing a game which cost people a lot of money. For this reason there are a lot of people who are not happy with him.A mother who is trying to make up with her daughter (Whoopi Goldberg).A crazy foreign person (Rowan Atkinson). A family who are on holiday in Vegas. The father of this family is a gambling man and cannot resisit the offer he gets to gamble. These characters all get brought together by casino owner Donald Sinclair (John Cleese) who sets up a little game ( a race to a nearby town) for them which the winner of gets 2 million pounds. What the contests don't realise is that Mr Sinclair is organising the race so that he can get people to bid on the winner. I was expecting great things from Rat Race but was sadly let down. It is marketed as all out comedy and to be honest it does have its funny moments but they are too rare. Lots of the jokes are simply not funny or too stupid to laugh at. The characters are bizarre and you end up not really caring who wins the race. Saying all that I did quite enjoy the ending but that wasnt enough to save the film. Rat Race is more of a rental movie rather then a purchase or cinema viewing. The cast looks good on paper but are totally wasted. What has potential to be a king rat turned into more of a dirty rat!

- 12/02/02 It seems as though John Cleese hasn't been in a decent comedy for ages. |
