Ray Mears is a survival expert who has spent his whole life devoted to Bushcraft, or what we may call 'living off the land'. He's the only person who goes off into the jungle and comes out fatter than when he went in (that's a joke), and he's the kid of guy you'd like to have around in an emergency (imagine being on a plane wreck with him).

He shot to fame in tiny snippets on the BBC show Tracks, and people just gelled to him, wanting to know more about him and his knowledge. Extreme Survival is one of his more recent shows, with this series taking place in 2003.

In the show, he visits six different locations around the world, travelling around and 'surviving' in the wild, and then recounting tales of others who have done the same. Whether it's starting a fire, eating berries, or building a camp, he shows us how to survive, and we love it!

In this series he goes to six locations:

*Belarus
*Thailand
*New Zealand
*Rogers' Rangers
*Namibia
*Alaska

Of course, quite why we need to know how to survive in the wilds of any of these places is questionable, but what you can't question is our desire to. It appeals to the boy scout in all of us, running around the woods again like seven year olds. For most of us, we grew up and became conformists, donning shirt and tie each day, but Mears has made a mint out of living the life we all began to as kids. It appeals to our primitive instincts - our need to hunt and be hunted, our need to survive, and our deep rooted need to take a dump in the woods.

All in all, another excellent Ray Mears series that combines re-inactment and anecdote with practical demonstrations and breath-taking scenery.

Summary: watch it

Is it him or the one with the funny names who stays in nice hotels between jaunts on the moor and needs a BBC health and safety officer on sitr before eating bugs.lol
