Reach For The Sky (DVD)

Description: Genre: War & Western - War / Theatrical Release: 1957 / Director: Lewis Gilbert (II) / Actors: Kenneth More, Muriel ... more
Reach For The Sky (DVD) ... Pavlow ... / DVD released 14 April, 2003 at ITV DVD / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Black & White, PAL, Widescreen / Reach for the Sky was a box-office hit in 1956 and rightly remains a fondly regarded classic of British cinema. Kenneth More is ideally cast as Douglas Bader, the gifted pilot who loses both legs in a pre-war air crash, only to play a major role in the Battle of Britain, rise to the rank of Group Captain and become a war hero. Based on Paul Brickhill's biography, this is an "official" history maybe, but Lewis Gilbert's screenplay and direction are historically accurate and informed by that very British humour, of which More was a natural. The film is graced by a decent supporting cast and a typically "widescreen" score from John Addison. On the DVD: Reach for the Sky is vividly reproduced in 16:9 anamorphic format and decent mono. There are subtitles for the hard of hearing and detailed biographies of More, Gilbert and Barder. The original theatrical trailer is included, but it would also have made sense to include an interview or documentary footage of Bader himself. --Richard Whitehouse

... Hurricanes - great stuff. Good history of the RAF and the Battle of Britain. One of the biggest British stars of the day, More makes Bader an at times infuriating but more often inspiring character, prone to setting about authority with the same passion he put into his flying. More is successful at turning a charismatic figure into a largely convincing character. Some of the scenes are very cheesy but very typical of the day. If you have time on a wet Sunday afternoon, then settle back in your armchair and watch this...more

Premium Review Reach For The Sky (DVD): Reach for the sky (165 words)

Rating:

Kenneth Moore plays the role of the legendary Airman Douglas Bader who lost both his legs during the war in an aeroplane crash. It is a war film but a British war film so, typically, it presents beautifully the 'stiff upper lip'. It is the story of the RAF, of the fight for British survival and the struggle of one man. It is a 'if at first you don't succeed' film. It is stirring and must have done a lot for people trying to struggle post war...'I think I've got it bad but look at him flying planes with no legs'. Perhaps today's comparison would be a film about Simon Weston who was so badly burned during the ...  Read the complete review

Rating:

This is truly a great story of detrmination, guts and heroism of some magnitude. most of all, its true. It tells the story of a flying ace called Doulgas Bader. Set during the Second World War,he was a famed pilot doing stunts in his aircraft for his flying friends to see. Despite several reprimands from officers, he continues to show off to his friends until one stunt ends in tragedy when he crashes. Despite attempts to save them, Douglas loses both his legs. There is a moving moment in the hospital when he complains about the pain he feels in his legs only to be told he does not have them anymore. The guts of this man are truly phenominal as he ...  Read the complete review

Reach for the Sky starring Kenneth More was made in the 1950s, with good effects for their time, the dog fights aren't so much thrilling as taken from actual footage. But this lends authenticity to this film which oozes 'Britishness'. Great if you are an aeroplane buff like me. All those Spitfires and Hurricanes - great stuff. Good history of the RAF and the Battle of Britain.
