Advantages: Excellant and believable film

Disadvantages: subtitles

After reading plipplops review of this, Andrew and I decided to give it a go and we are glad we did so 'thanks' plipplop!

The story starts with the camera filming a young woman who is presenting a documentary about the life of a fireman. Herself and the cameraman follow them around the fire station until an emergency call comes in which turns out to be a bit more than the average call. When they get to the block of flats that they are called to there is an old woman who is covered in blood and events unfold from there.

The film is very much like 'The Blair Witch Project' in that it is filmed as if it is a real life event. You never see the guy who is behind the camera and the motions are often wobbly and amateurish.

The brilliant thing about this film is it genuinely is very scarey without being unbelievable. I find that the few films that have been filmed in this way have been much more amusing than scary but this one is very well done and convinces the viewer that everything that is going on is real.

I have to say that I was a little confused at first and thought my hubby had put the wrong film on because it wasn't how I expected it to be. It starts out all light and airy with the fresh face presenter and it's not until the film progresses that the pictures get a lot darker and morbid and the lights seem to dim a bit.

As I have said this film is a horror but I didn't find it as scary as I thought. Maybe that's because it is a light summer evening. Perhaps if it had been a blowy and rainy winter night, I would have been a bit more frightened, having said that there were a few moments where I jumped out of my skin and I am sure that I won't be going to the loo by myself tonight!

The one thing that might annoy some people is the fact that it is actually a Spanish film with English subtitles. I'm pretty open minded and I don't mind watching subtitles at all but when the person that wrote them is obviously not very fluent in English it can be a little hard to understand. It didn't ruin the film to the point where I got so frustrated because the film was of excellent quality but it did get in the way a little and I couldn't fully relax into it.

This has to be one of the best horrors that I have seen to date because it is so well done. It has the real life feel without being tacky and unbelievable and although the story line sounds as though it's been done before, I felt that it was done in a way that was very original. I would definitely recommend it but not to those who are a little jittery, you might end up pooing your pants!

Summary: A really good saturday night horror!
