Advantages: scary
Disadvantages: could have been scarier
This is a Spanish horror film, so the first thing you need to get into your head is that you'll be reading subtitles the whole way through. Having said that, I think it adds to the horror, as it creates a sense of unease the whole way through on its own.
The film follows a young TV reporter as she documents the night shift at the local fire station. At first not much happens, but then a call to a strange apartment block changes everything.
Shot on one camera from the perspective of the TV camera-man, this is a great thriller with touches of nasty horror in it too. There's a good mix of bloody horror with the type where the tension scares you, and some 'in the dark' horror too.
The acting is solid throughout, with lots of little touches to make it seem like real life, which makes the horror all the more believable.
Whilst not the most original of plots, it's well shot and acted, and the simplistic approach of how to scare you is well considered.
I have no criticisms of the film, other than it isn't as scary as I may have expected. I think it works better as a thriller, and its unpredictability keeps you guessing to the (rather short) 75 minute end.
An American version has been released, called Quarrantine, but all accounts deem it not as good.
The fact that you can pick this up for less than a fiver is just mind-blowing to me. It is undoubtedly one of the best films I've seen in a long time. They've done it stripped down and on a low budget, but they haven't ended up with a cheesey corn-fest like so often happens.
All in all, a well produced horror thriller that I recommend whole-heartedly.
