Lisa Reisert is a hotel manager from LA. On a red eye flight home, she meets Jack Rippner. Soon into the flight, it becomes obvious that their meet wasn't coincedental. Jack is aware of the involvement Lisa has in the management of the Lux Hotel and uses her in a plot to assasinate a polictal official who is due to arrive at the hotel. Not only does he take control of Lisa at 30000 feet, he also has control of her father and threatens to have him hurt if she doesn't co-operate with his demands. What will she do?

This thriller film is a regular in my DVD collection. I am a fan of both Rachael McAdams and Cillian Murphy. I also enjoy films based around planes so this seemed like the ideal film for me. There are a lot of background actors in this film as you would expect (other travellers, people in the hotel etc) but the main focus is definitely on Lisa and Jack.
The plot is good. There is a lot of emphasis on family loyalty on Lisas part and also political and terrorism ideas on Jacks part. The start of film doesn't give a great deal away. It involves Lisa arriving at the airport to find her flight delayed. She meets Jack who, from the beginning, has a rather forward attitude. Of course Lisa is totally unaware that Jack knows where she lives, where she works, what she drinks etc. It is very planned out and as we discover what Jack actually knows, you can see how uneasy Lisa is - wouldn't you be?
The main characters of Lisa and Jack have been chosen well. Lisa is a young woman who has just lost her grandmother. On the outside, she appears fragile but looks can be deceiving as we discover as the film goes on. She is scared of flying which gives Jack the upperhand as he tries to gain her trust by calming her down. Rachael McAdams was definitely the right choice for this role. I find she is quite an adaptable actress. Cillian Murphy was the perfect choice for Jack Rippner and his role was carried out very well. He was charming but still quite creepy at first and you could get he had a motive. Both characters are very convincing in their respective roles.
For most of the plane journey, the story remains quite realistic. Whilst many other passengers were sleeping, I found it difficult to believe that no one was able to tell that Lisa was in distress at Jacks revelations and plans. Lisa has no option but to go along with Jacks demands. Unaware of whether her father will remain alive or not, she has to do what is asked of her. Her family loyalty takes priority over Charles Keefe (the political official), the intended target. She is quite witty and does try to get around Jack on several occasions but often fails. He has left nothing to chance and doesn't care who is hurt - he has a job to finish.
Cynthia is in charge of the Lux Hotel whilst Lisa is away. She is quite dippy and has one of those irritating voices. She is totally oblivious to why Lisa needs to make alterations to the hotel bookings at short notice. The whole plane scenario is quite good and makes up the main part of the film. It is quite scary that the fate of several people can be changed at 30000 feet and I feel that the film was directed and executed well. I don't suppose it would be easy to carry out an thriller mainly in mid air.
I found Red Eye to be paced very well. Whilst there isn't a great deal of action on the plane, there is a lot of pyschological aspects involved with the hostage situation involving Lisa and Jack. It is very intense and in my opinion, doesn't come boring or too drawn out. I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. It is very gripping through mild scenes of violence and threats. There isn't much swearing or sexual content (unless you consider the mild scene in the airport toilet as sexual) so it is suitable for teenagers to watch too.
Towards the end of the film, the plane lands in LA and it changes quite a bit. There are some fast paced scenes in the airport and on the road and whilst I won't reveal the ending, it is a good enough conclusion but not as exciting or as realistic as one would expect. A lot of the tension in the film is courtesy of some heavy handed music.
At 85 minutes long, some may consider this too long for a film focussed around a red eye flight. I found to be just the right length for the plot. It didn't seem rushed but at the same time, the film was kept intense and watchable the whole way through. I would say Red Eye is a good film to watch. It doesn't rely on blood and guts but does have some impressive stunt scenes which make you cringe. The main focus is on mentally keeping a young female hostage. It is engaging and entertaining.
I have watched many Wes Craven films and feel that Red Eye is a good choice but not the best that he has directed. It doesn't quite match the quality of the Scream films or The Hills Have Eyes but is great in its own right.

The story is about Lisa Reisert who has been in Dallas for the funeral of her grandmother. She has to go back to Miami on the Red Eye flight the same night because she has to work the next day. She works as a manager of a large hotel. Before she flies she has a drink in the bar of the airport where she meets Jack Ripner and they start to talk. Once on the plane it appears that Jack has the seat next to her. They have a casual flirtation but it appears it was no accident that Jack was seated next to Lisa. Jack needs Lisa it to kill an important politician who stays at the hotel where Lisa works. He threatens Lisa with the death of her father if she does not cooperate. Lisa is 20 thousand feet in the air and if she tells anyone Jack will have her father killed. What will she do and how will she save her father's life without having to kill anyone else?
The performances are good in this movie with Rachel McAdams who is the lead really strong. I know Rachel from the movie Notebook, in which she also gave a very good performance and i am a fan of hers. In this film she is very good and she is really credible playing a young woman who is subjected to such a terrifying ordeal. alongside Cillian Murphy plays the role of terrorist Jack and with his baby face and bright blue eyes at the beginning looks far from menacing but when he reveals his intentions really transforms and is believable at playing the bad guy and there is something really creepy about him,
There are a few extras on DVD include a making off of the film where the actors tell a little bit about the film. An extra on the special effects, a directors commentary and a blooper reel.
Red Eye is an exciting film and something different from the normal boy meets girl film it starts out like. The story is good and wes craven really builds the tension. Maybe in the beginning a little slow but that is more than made up for halfway. The performances are good in this movie and especially Cillian Murphy who really plays creepy well. The extras on the dvd are pretty standard but ok if you are interested in knowing a bit more about the film.
I really liked the movie and is definitely a must if you like thrillers.
Red Eye, originally released in 2005 is a pretty enjoyable action drama thriller directed by Wes Craven. It is definately worth watching on DVD.
The premise for the story is of a young, dedicated, but lonely hotel manager by the name of Lisa Reisert played by Rachel McAdams. She learns that hit man Jackson Rippner played by Cillian Murphy wants to use her to switch Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, Charles Keefe's hotel room. The purpose of changing the rooms, is that the switch will mean that Keefe and his family are in a large open room with a large window, and therefore vulnerable to attack by rocket launcher.
As the movie starts we see an unidentified man taking Lisa's father's wallet from his home and taking his credit cards and destoying the rest of the contents. Next we move to a large crate being broken open and inside a strange waterproof box being loaded into the back of a van. Meanwhile Lisa is on her way to the airport.
Once at the airport Lisa learns her flight is delayed and she meets Jackson in the queue. In the bar they have drinks together and sit next to each other on the plane. Her mood changes when she realises the real reason that Jackson has befriended her. She soon discovers he has been stalking and secretly watching her every move for weeks knowing she has managerial access to change Keefe's room at the hotel. She has a terrible choice to make and a no win situation. She either agrees and changes the room so Keefe and his family will be killed or disagrees and her father will be killed by an assassin sitting outside his home.
Because of the way the script is written and the awful situation she is faced with the movie drew me in and I became intrigued as to which way she should turn. Should she agree and in doing so condemn a man to death or stand and fight and try to save her father from being murdered?
Lisa Reisert's characters is very interesting and played extremely well. She does a great job of pulling the audience into her plight and bring realism to the impossible position she is in. She controls the move esentially from start to finish.
Although a little slow to start perhaps once this film got going I was gripped and it's intensity keeps you watching as you wonder what you might do in a similar situation. The movie does contain some bad language that would not be suitable for children and a little bit of violence as you might expect from a film of this nature. It is an action packed movie after the opening and is very engaging. Highly recommended

Wes Craven is a legend of the horror industry: his influence is felt throughout probably the most influential horror era, the late 70s and early 80s, with films such as The Hills Have Eyes and A Nightmare on Elm Street, as well as the visceral 60s classic The Last House on the Left. However, after the Scream films came out, he'd had a bit of a creative drought, although with Red Eye, he returns back to top form kicking and screaming, with an inventive and claustrophobic film that will just intensify your fear of flying if you have it!
Lisa Reisert (Rachel McAdams) has a fear of flying, and is only doing so because of her grandmother's funeral. She gets a red eye flight back home, and meets Jackson Rippner (Cillian Murphy) on board, a man she had already met at the bar, and so enjoys the coincidence. However, once the plane takes off, Jackson informs her that he is a terrorist, who plans to assassinate Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Charles Keefe (played by Jack Scalia), and Lisa must help him as she is the manager of the hotel where they are staying. What's more, if she doesn't comply, a hitman will kill her father (Brian Cox), making for a very tight bind and an incredibly tense situation both in the sky and below it.
For the first two acts, this film is a highly engrossing thriller, that builds tension aptly and really makes the viewer wonder how it will all pan out, but it does descend into a by-the-numbers cat-and-mouse slasher by its climax. Nevertheless, it is a pleasing return to form for Wes Craven, and provides the necessary thrills for the most part.
The first thing I will say is that there is nothing 'wrong' with this movie...its very hard to put my finger on it!!
It is very much your typical watch when theres nothing on type thriller. Its playing on many peoples fear of flying and the inherrant, instilled rule that speaking to strangers is bad!
I was impressed with the acting and the claustraphopic feeling of the plane setting, I tend to enjoy movies that are set in restricted and tight spaces, it usually allows the director to let their imagination roam, and sneak fear into people.
This just didnt really have 'it' it was very predictable, and the twists were not really twists at all. It is supposed to be a thriller but I have to say that I wasnt particularly thrilled. There are no effects to speak of, and I have to say that the story just didnt happen for me, it really had a lot of potential and I think that with some major plugging of some plot holes, it could have worked really well.
As I said earlier, the acting was surprisingly good given that they were working within a story that had no real point, and I think that these 2 are ones to watch in fuure, definate potential in both. CIllian is a great villain, just as McAdams is a great foil for that, in seeming a voulnerable woman with a kick...
I personally wouldnt avoid the movie, it just isnt one I would chose to watch, I have to say a bit disappointing given the director and the class of acting that he had to work with, perhaps he was trying so hard to be mainstream that he forgot how to evoke fear??
So realistically its nothing to write home about, but there are worse thrillers!!
'Red Eye' is directed by Wes Craven and stars Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy as its two lead characters. I was interested in seeing this as I'm a bit of a fan of Craven's films; 'The Hills Have Eyes', 'Nightmare On Elm Street', 'Scream' and 'New Nightmare'.
As a well established purveyor of the horror genre, it comes as some surprise to see that 'Red Eye' is a fast paced thriller.....with a 12 certificate!. Could this be the same Wes Craven who appalled the British censors so much with his debut film 'Last House On The Left' in 1972 that it remained heavily cut on dvd until last year?. Well 'yes', but also 'no'. Since making 'Scream' it is clear that Craven wants a piece of the mainstream Hollywood action.
'Red Eye' has the two attractive leads taking the night plane [or 'Red Eye', so called because you emerge from the journey blurry eyed] from Dallas to Miami. McAdams's Lisa Reisert lives in Miami as a hotel manager and is travelling back from her Grandmother's funeral in Dallas. Cillian Murphy, Jack Rippner [awful name!], is at first a smooth talking potential suitor, buying Lisa a drink and sitting next to her on the plane. But just when poor old Rachel McAdams thinks she's bagged herself a hunk it turns out that he is an assassin intent on killing a high profile guest staying at Lisa's hotel. He needs her to phone through his directions to the hotel, otherwise he will kill her father [ yet another fake american accent from Brian Cox, is there anything he isn't in?].
The plot is a bit on the paper thin side, but at a brisk 73 minutes Craven grabs your attention early on and dispenses with a 'middle' to the film, where there might be the usual exposition type stuff, and goes straight for the jugular. On the whole this approach works quite well, after setting up the claustrophobia of the first part of the film with Lisa and Jack sat next to each other on the plane, the second and final part is a race to see who can get to the hotel first.
Murphy is very good as Jack Rippner, not a trace of his heavy Irish accent can be detected. McAdams is also good playing first the bewildered victim, and then the action heroine with equal conviction. Craven can't resist putting in one of his favourite themes; revenge. The idea of turning the tables on the aggressors is a theme he enjoys exploring in most of his films.
Murphy's character does not hold back, at one point headbutting McAdams unconscious, and strangling her in a airplane toilet in another scene. This brought back painful memories of 'Last House On The Left' but thankfully with a 12 certificate Craven had to reign himself in from that film's exploitative violence against women.
In secondary roles, Brian Cox is ok as Lisa's father though there is not alot for him to do. He's mostly just required to talk on the phone to Lisa. Jayma Mays is fine as Lisa's assistant Cynthia, trying to keep the Hotel running smoothly in Lisa's absence.
The music from Marco Beltrami was effective, but certainly nothing original. When his main theme started up early in the film I got the feeling it was going to irritate me by the end of the film....and sure enough it did. Craven wanted the music to drive the film along, and in that respect it does it's job. It's just a bit cliched 'thriller' music.
There are some rather implausible moments in 'Red Eye' which I shan't spoil for you, but on the whole I would advise renting this movie, its no masterpiece but it will occupy you for 73 minutes. I enjoyed the film and thought it was interesting to see Craven, for so many years 'Mr Scary' making a film that your granny could watch and not be too shocked.
The dvd has some good extras including a couple of short documentaries and a commentary, which was ok though rather self congratulating [Craven can be a bit smug]. Don't pay more than £5 for it to buy on dvd, you should be able to get it for that price on Amazon or Play. Or rent it instead of course!.

Lisa is pleasantly surprised to find that the handsome Jackson has the seat next to her on the flight and they begin to chat. It transpires that this was not a chance meeting as Jackson is a terrorist planning to assassinate the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security who is staying at Lisa's hotel and threatens to send a hitman to kill Lisa's father if she does not co-operate.
In case you were wondering: Yes, this film is as ridiculous as it sounds. It's pretty standard Wes Craven fare really and it becomes predictable and fairly boring very quickly. There isn't really anything to differentiate from any other film in this genre really. It isn't particularly witty, the heroine makes a few futile attempts to communicate with other passengers about her plight. Rachel McAdams seems to be doing her best Sandra Bullock impression as a supposedly smart independent women/damsel in distress. Quite why women in these films who are supposed to have everything together always turn into silly girls at the sight of ay handsome man who can string a sentence together is beyond me. If I can see that there is something creepy and dead-behind-the-eyes about him surely a woman who can manage a massive hotel would have a slight clue. But apparently not. Cillian Murphy is pretty good as the stock 'heartless bastard' character but the role seems a bit beneath someone of his acting ability. It's a fairly standard kidnap thriller but I wouldn't watch it again.
The first thing that made me take notice of this film was that Rachel McAdams was in it. This was released in 2005 so pretty soon after her two monster hits Mean Girls & one of my favourite films The Notebook in which she was fantastic in it & of course in Mean Girls. She's also great in this & I really can't praise her enough, I think she's a fantastic actress & I hope she does a lot more great movies in the future as she's really someone to look out for. Instead of going down the route of alcohol & drugs like her Mean Girls co-star Lindsay Lohan did, Rachel McAdams seems to really have her eye on the prize & want to concentrate on her career & doing this she has picked some fantastic roles.
Another thing that attracted me to this film was of course the director, Wes Craven. The scream trilogy are three of my favourite films & he really has a great way of building tension in his films. Although he is famous for horrors he really excels in this film & of course with it being a thriller he is able to use his horror background to add that element of terror & desperation into this film & I must say that it works brilliantly.
This film is based around Rachel McAdam's character Lisa Reisert, she's a hotel receptionist that is on her way back to Miami after attending her Grandmothers funeral. Rachel hates to fly & before even getting on the flight is nervous. A man named Jackson brilliantly portrayed by Cillian Murphy notices that she's nervous & makes his way over to make conversion with the intent of calming her. They chat & seem to get on well, he seems like a real gentlemen. Coincidently when Lisa boards the plane Jackson is in the seat next to her.
After take off things take a dramatic turn with Jackson revealing that it's no coincidence that they're sat together & unveils the shocking reason why he made an effort to talk to her & why he is sat next to her. He wants something from her & is willing to go to any lengths to get it but is Lisa willing to give it to him?
I recently watched the bonus material on this DVD & like the film it is great, it includes a gag reel, an interview with Wes Craven & other cast members & commentary from the filmmakers. When I was watching the film commentary I noticed to my surprise that Cillian Murphy is actually Irish! As I have never seen him in a film before I was surprised as his American accent had me totally convinced!
If anyone reading this hasn't seen this film then you really must. It's a great thriller, with lots of great twists & turns along the way. It will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat all the way through as you will Lisa to get away from Jackson. Cillian Murphy is great as the terrifying & intensely menacing Jackson. As I have never seen him in anything before I will definitely look out for him in the future. This film without doubt deserves to be up there with Rachel McAdams great films Mean Girls & The Notebook, it is so different from all her previous roles but she manages to pull it off with a brilliant performance, she really manages to get the audience behind her every step of the way. Credit also has to go to the brilliant Wes Craven as although this is a little different from his previous films he is definitely not out of his depth & manages to direct a taut, clever thriller.
A hotel supervisor were in the way to her hometown to meet his father. In the last flight she met a stranger who seemed too good to be true. He was funny and he was very mysterious and appealing in the same way. But then she just realized that the stranger was someone who was hired to blackmail and kill her and her father.
All I have to say about this movie was that this movie had a very nice plot. I love how the scriptwriter twisted the story and make the movie unpredictable. I know that there might be some movie like this before but this one was very different.
My favorite scenes was all the scenes took place in the aircraft. Which was not only very fast flowing but was also thrilling and very exciting.
The idea was quite unique. A simple one though.
I would recommend this movie for those who like thriller movie with a little psychological challenge in the story. This is one that you should have watched because Red Eye was something that really would make you stunned.
Not suggested for children, especially without the parent guidance when watching this movie. There were a little violence in this movie we should be aware of.
Well this was just some random movie i picked using my Tesco DVD rental service.
Before picking any movie i always check critics review and i got say this movie did fairly well there and thats before i added on an extra star because whatever critics say its usually much better.

The first 10 minutes or so set the scene before it gets into the heat of things. The movie begins with Lisa Reisert an always on the move hotel assistant going through the checking in stages of getting to Miami after her grandma died.
Whilst trying to get on the delayed flight to Miami she has multiple run ins with a guy called Jackson Ripner.
After having a few drinks and then coincedently sit next to each other on the place things start to turn Sinister.
In actual fact Jackson is out to assasinate a politician staying in the hotel Lisa works out and he needs her to change their room for the plan to work.
Now for the first hour the movie is quite good with the two on the plane, it has that phonebooth feel to it. However nothing in this movie was quite powerful enough and then once that hour was up things start to go downhill as it trys to conclude the movie.
The once smart assasin, Jackson Riptner slowly becomes more and more stupid and you start screaming at your TV saying sheesh. i work the usualy 9-5, nowt special about me and i can do a better job.
The movie lacks any oomphh and comparing it to Phonebooth is quite an insult really to Phonebooth as that was a great, great movie and this however is not.
The acting in this movie isnt bad, but again this is for the hour which i said was decent.
Overall the critics gave it a fairly decent mark and thats before i add a few more points because critics were harsh however in this case i will have to take a few stars off as this movie just isnt worth it.
Theres worser movies out there but at the end of the day you should have to put up with a bad movie.
I am surprised that everyone (even the critics) seems to think this was a good movie. It was the most clichéd thriller ever made that I have seen. We have the 'bad guy' who wants to force the 'good guy' (or girls in this case) to do something or face the consequence. The 'good girl' in this movie must use her smarts and skills to defeat the 'bad guy' and save the day and her loved ones. Using charisma, bravery, and even luck to save the day.
Where to begin? Well, a young woman by the name of Lisa Reisert meets a young man by the name of Jackson Rippner (nice name) at an airport. One coincidence leads to another and soon it seems as if fate is bringing these two together. Sharing drinks, sitting next to each other, seemingly getting along in every way... Is there more to this strangeness? Could these two be meant for each other? Does 'fate' have a reason for their strange and random encounter?
Well, as it turns out, unfortunately yes. Jackson needs Lisa to help him assassinate the Director of Homeland Security by moving him from one room to another so that his men can launch an attack on him. Oh, if she doesn't do this then her father is dead. Though we never learn the exact reasons why and who is really behind this madness, Jackson more then explains how this is going to happen and why its in Lisa's best interest to help him.
Of course, Lisa defeats his evil plans with her smarts and in the process stabs him in the neck, makes him trip over chairs, and hitting him with a field hockey stick. Oh, and before that, she leads him on wild chase through Miami airport where she gets passed post 9 11 security and steals a car that she later uses to run over the man who was ordered to kill her father.
First of all, I find it strange that a man like Jackson who can get his hands on high tech weaponry needs the help of a hotel manager. Couldn't he just sneak a bomb into the building? Wouldn't that make it safer for him and his team by leaving out any third parties? And why do characters like Jackson also explain everything they are going to do to someone they are threatening? Doesn't that make it easier to stop them by the same people?
The actors did their best considering the movie they were given. Racheal McAdams and Cillian Murphy are still actors to look out for. Also, I believe that Jayma Mays (who played the 'loveable' Cynthia) will be someone we will see more of. It's just too bad they all were stuck with this.
Lisa Reisert has her mobile stuck to her head most of the time. It seems that the only way she can conduct, or order, her confusing business and private lives is to organise it all by phone.
She is desperately trying to make suitable arrangement with everyone as quickly as possible and is only too much aware that she could miss her flight to Miami. However, the flight is delayed she ends up in the company of a gentleman named Jackson Rippner. The name sounds very familiar, for some reason and made me smile because it was a real giveaway of the plot before we even got to know the characters.
When they board the plane they have seats next to each other. Of course they had to because of his name and the mounting sense of stress around her. The plot could only be headed in one direction.
There is a built up of psychological tension here as we wait to see if we are correct and Jackson Rippner is who we think he is. All kinds old images come to mind as the two travellers get to know each other.
Director Wes Craven does a great job of keeping the tension going and feeding us titbits that lead us in particular directions and then show us how wrong we can be. It's clever and makes the film interesting.
However, the whole thing is really much too short to develop into anything that really keeps the interest for long. It's an intense psychological thriller but could have done with just a bit more plot and a slower, more intense build up. The actual film is just seventy six minutes long and the rest is taken up be credits that run past at a very slow speed.
The casting here helps to cover the weaknesses in the plot as Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy make the whole setup more believable. This is especially true at the end when Jack is trying to kill the girl's father. He steps over him at least once when he is laying there just waiting for it. He also ignores the knife to reach for the gun.
The pace of the whole film is sometimes almost manic as Craven packs in chases, explosions, fights and suspense sequences and still manages to get it all done in such a short space of time. I really thought that this would have been better as a TV programme that a movie.
I would recommend this if you like psychological thrillers. It has everything you would expect from the genre although it is a bit rushed. Wes Craven makes what could have been a film with nothing fresh to say into a short film worth watching.
It is certified as 12A but I would rate it for slightly older teens. It depends very much on the teen of course.
So, would I vote this a hit, or a miss. A hit I think. It was intensely enjoyable if a little short.

After attending her grandmothers funeral, Lisa Reisert prepares to return to work flying on the red eye. When she meets handsome stranger Jackson (his full name is a dead giveaway) as she prepares to board, she soon finds herself in trouble. You see, Jackson is part of a conspiracy to assassinate a campaigning politician, and said politician is co-incidently staying at the hotel where Lisa works as a manager. With the threat of her father being murdered, Lisa has no choice but to co-operate. Soon, she is involved in a game of cat and mouse with Jackson as she attempts to save both her father and her job.
Its been a while since Wes Craven has done anything of note. He re-invented horror with his original Nightmare On Elm Street film, and then re-defined it twice with the self-referential sequel New Nightmare and the mega-successful Scream. But the last Scream film was rotten to the core and everything he has done since has met with a deafening silence from both the critics and the box office. Once again, however Craven turns his hand to the thriller - this time making his villain a very real menace and his victim an emotionally scarred but credible heroine. The shocks are somewhat predictable, and the script is only mildly effective. But the use of a claustrophobic plane, and the subsequent battle-to-the-death are effectively done. That the film requires so much suspension of belief doesn't detract from a tense and taut thriller. However, long after the film is over, you cant help but wish the scenario Lisa finds herself in could have been a little less co-incidental and a little more believable.
Rachel McAdams is going great guns in Hollywood. After successful turns in weepy The Notebook and her bitchy turn in Mean Girls, she shifts easily into the role of damsel in distress. But unlike other heroines of Craven's horror, she is neither too knowing or too wimpy. She fights when its required, and cries when she feels weak, and boy can the chick scream. McAdams has a great career ahead of her, and it certainly doesn't do her any harm to stick herself in a scenario where she is far better than the material. Cillian Murphy also makes for a terrific villian. Wes usually specialises in monsters in pizza-make up, or silly masks, so its nice to see him present something altogether more human. Murphy is both mysterious and absolutely terrifying, and his dead eyed look is a far scarier weapon than Freddy Kruegers glove has been for a couple of decades. That Craven has pitched such a resourceful heroine with such a clever but flawed villain is a credit to his ability to create terrific tension in an otherwise pedestrian story.
The supporting actors are also fairly effective. They dont get a lot to work with but are entirely neccessary to make Lisa's plight all the more frightening. Relative newcomer Jayma Mays is great comedic value, as she has to deal with a major catastrophe and an endless amount of complaining customers. Her scene's are a welcome relief from the tension. And Brian Cox as Lisa's father and Jack Scalia as politician Charles Keefe are both terrific in roles that get just enough screentime, but dont hog the story.
Carl Ellsworth is more notable for his tv writing, having penned scripts for Xena, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and The Legend of Tarzan, but its Red Eye that gives him his break into film. For a first effort, it really isn't bad, although it does lose credibility on a few occassions. Thankfully he has a master of horror on hand to bring the bland and predictable story to life. And whilst the script is a bit staid at times, its never diabolical. Time will tell whether Ellsworth has what it takes to make it as a screen writer, but if Red Eye and his more recent foray Disturbia are a sign of things to come, then I cant imagine he'll have too much trouble selling his scripts to the studio.
In the meantime, he and Craven have produced a simple but enjoyable film that makes the very best of its leading actors and a passable script.
I went to see this film when I went to Dundalk, Ireland. It was a fast moving film with lots of jumpy bits in it.
The story is about a woman who is kidnapped by a stranger on a routine flight. Threatened by the potential murder of her father, she is pulled into a plot to assist her captor in offing a wealthy executive. It's not a masterpiece, but it's well directed and structured. Cillian Murphy and Rachel McAdams are perfect in the role. Yes, it's the same old story with a different setting but Wes Craven gave it a good pace who directed it.
Her attempts in getting away from him though are always thwarted by her getting caught again.
Wes Craven is at his best ever. He brings us an amazing end of summer thriller. I was so desperately craving. This is an outstanding thriller in my opinion.
All the actors are good and the action is realistic and fun. It steadily built suspense. I was on the edge of my seat during most of the movie. It's been a while since I heard an audience cheer and clap, and get excited in a theater.
If your looking for thrills, action and a good plot, Red Eye delivers it. So get the dvd now, as it is out in the shops for sale or rent.

After the death of her grandmother, Lisa Reisert embarks on the homeward journey back to Miami, where she works in a major beachside hotel. In her absence, new recruit Cynthia is keeping an eye on things and, awkward customers notwithstanding, everything seems to be going fairly smoothly. If only the same could be said of the current status of air travel. Torrential rainfall has grounded some flights and delayed many others so, with time on her hands, Lisa finds herself taking cocktails in an airport bar. Having previously bumped into a young man named Jackson at the check-in desk, she is pleasantly surprised to find him in the same bar and the pair exchange life stories over drinks. The time passes quickly and before long, it's time to join the flight, where yet another coincidence prevails. Lisa finds herself sat next to the same man on the plane. It's a good job really. With severe turbulence on the way up and an inherent fear of flying, Lisa needs someone to distract her from the rigours of the take-off.
Jackson certainly provides a good distraction. He discusses the sad death of her grandmother. He talks about her father back at home in Miami. He talks about her job. He talks about his job. He talks about the influential executive William Keefe and he discusses how Lisa is going to help Jack kill him.

Fasten your seatbelts please. This flight is about to get very bumpy .
Wes Craven, eh? He's a one. Legendary horror meister and purveyor of such classics as The Hills Have Eyes, The Last House on The Left, Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street. But the horror legend's imagination ran dry many years ago and it's a long time since he directed anything even half good. His new ploy, therefore, is to change tactic and give the horror a miss. Surprised? Me too. Wes Craven is so synomymous with horror movies that I just kind of assumed that Red Eye would be a horror movie too. It is, in fact, a thriller. It's a simple one too - think Phone Booth meets Panic Room and you're a third of the way there. You're only a third though because those two films are far superior to this.
More Bruckheimer than Craven, the film opens as it means to go on. A thundering soundtrack accompanies underhand dealings in a fish market (I kid you not) where big fish are being used to conceal an assignment of something far more sinister. Switch to the airport where our heroine Lisa is introduced amidst a small supporting cast of fellow plane passengers, each of whom has a small part to play in the proceedings. More caricature than character, there is sweet little old lady who keeps interrupting at the most inconvenient moments. There are two college kids messing around and a little girl who will prove to be far more intuitive than any of her adult counterparts. It all feels more like a disaster movie than anything else to be honest, and you can't help thinking that Mr Craven would have had far more fun despatching them all in one imaginative way after another rather than let them live.
Red Eye is a story in three acts - a vaguely concealed attempt to put together a Hitchcock thriller. Act one is "introduction". This is the settling down for the audience where we watch Lisa walk unsuspectingly into a trap. Act two is "peril". This is where Lisa realises her plight and starts to get herself into a sticky mess. Act three is "action". This is where .well, you'll have to watch the film for yourself to fill in the missing blank there. I'm not going to give everything away, after all. In it's three parts, Red Eye does work very well. It's something that was hinted at in the (excellent) trailer that painted a picture of "rom-com" innocence before shattering us all with one simple revelation. Red Eye's simple, rapid structure means that the audience never really has time to get bored, even when the "action" is simply the dialogue between Lisa and her (unknown) captor. At around, one hour and twenty-five minutes in length, Red Eye simply doesn't have time to be anything else. Don't expect complex character / plot development here. This is "hit and run" from the outset.
The film doesn't stand up well to intelligent analysis. It is full of implausibility and those stupid assumptions that only Americans seem to make. Lisa Reihert is initially not an endearing heroine. Her tearful trembling and feeble protestations soon wear rather thin and much of the peril seems to be of her own making. Given what she is told by her captor, a simple solution, for example, would simply be to scream and go doolally. They're on a plane. What can he do? In this day and age, I'm rather convinced that the plane crew would be fairly responsive to such a threat. But she doesn't, opting instead to try and leave covert messages and give secret signals that you just know are doomed. Sigh. It gets worse later on, when America's homeland security team seems utterly incapable of just about everything. It's not long before the action gets going that you know it's time to turn your brain off.
But, strangely enough, when you do finally switch off the grey matter, Red Eye becomes a far more enjoyable romp. There is a certain element of suspense and, plausible or not, Lisa's plight does create the atmosphere that Craven was looking for. There are a couple of jumps and shocks and whilst the final scenes play out, some of the Wes Craven of old starts to come out again. Lisa's "get up and go" gets up and comes back and it all has a fairly satisfying air to it.
Cillian Murphy's Jackson Rippner (yes, that IS the character's name) is fairly effective. In aiming for the bad guy roles, Murphy has definitely made the right decision - his eerie eyes and strange features could never really be anything other than malevolent. Following his turn as the Scarecrow in Batman Begins he is once again a capable and enthusiastic menace and a good lesson in why it's never a good idea to talk to strangers. Rachel McAdams' turn as Lisa Reisert is less inspiring, although completely appropriate to the role. With her curly brown hair, sweet little eyes and cute little outfit, she might as well be wearing a "VICTIM" T-shirt and you can't fault her abilities to be both pathetic and assertive. Brian Cox's performance as Reihert's father is a small part of the film, memorable only really for the startling observation of how much weight the seasoned actor has lost.
If I had to describe the tone of Red Eye, I would say that it was rather like a Scooby Doo adventure. It all takes off pretty quickly, everyone runs around and gets in and out of danger. As the film draws to a close, all that is missing is one of those "Pesky Kids" kind of statements that the bad guy always makes in Scooby Doo, and the cycle would be complete. It's all completely removed from anything that Wes Craven would normally be involved in and whilst this doesn't inherently make it a bad film, you can't help thinking that something far more sinister could have been put together here.It's a likeable film, probably for all the wrong reasons, but not one that anybody should race out and see.
Red Eye is the latest movie from Wes Craven, whose most recent successes, the Scream trilogy, give some flavour of what to expect here. The action once again centres on a strong, young woman, this time called Lisa and played by Rachel McAdams (recently seen in Wedding Crashers), who spends all her time managing a busy hotel. On a flight back from a funeral, she finds herself sat next to a wealthy businessman, played by Cillian Murphy (whose performance remains one of the many highlights of Batman Begins. He has an agenda however, that involves using Lisa to clear the way for a contract killing at her hotel. With her father at home under constant watch, and sat next to a man threatening to kill him, the stage is set for a healthy little thriller. And thats just what Red Eye is. While some distance away from Cravens best work, it has some big pluses in its favour. Firstly, its a very swift ride that doesnt outstay its welcome, speeding through plot developments that others in the genre would sit and ponder on for some time. Its also got the charm of Rachel McAdams in the lead role, who pitches well against the sneer and creepiness of Cillian Murphy. And finally, it delivers good old fashioned Friday night fun, without having pretensions to do anything else. So while its hardly a defining thriller in any way, nor is it without one or two unintentional giggles, Red Eye works surprisingly well. In the hands of a lesser director, its got all the ingredients for straight-to-video hell, but with Craven at the helm and his two leads performing well, its a movie that happily punches above its weight.--Simon Brew
