Red Heat (DVD) ... Belushi ... / DVD released 20 May, 2002 at Momentum Pictures / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / After scoring a hit with the Eddie Murphy-Nick Nolte cop thriller 48 Hours, director Walter Hill returned to the buddy formula with this half-ridiculous, half-invigorating action flick about humourless Russian cop Ivan Danko (Arnold Schwarzenegger). He follows a drug dealer from Moscow to Chicago, where he's matched up with city cop Art Ridzik (James Belushi), whose work ethic is considerably more relaxed. Most of the humour revolves around Danko's grumpy reaction to good ol' American capitalism, while Ridzik urges him to chill out. Red Heat is not bad as action comedies go, but only if you get into the absurd spirit of this predictable fare, in which the unlikely buddies get to wisecrack and act casually while mayhem erupts everywhere they go. Incidentally, Red Heat was the first American film allowed to shoot in Moscow's Red Square. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

... look menacing and scary beyond belief, then he'd probably still be as successful as he is, but here he gives a good combination of acting and action. As Danko, he looks the part completely, using brute force and training to overcome any disadvantage he has at the Russian cop not being allowed a gun in the States. James Belushi works brilliantly with him as Art, and his wise-cracking almost lazy cop combines in perfect balance with Arnie's Russian model of devotion to the law. Belushi is known for his wisecracks and...more

Premium Review Red Heat (DVD): Arnie tackles the issue of the Cold War (680 words)
by - written on 22/05/08 (Very useful, 47 readings)
Rating:

With the Cold War an ever present feature of much of the latter part of the 20th Century, and with the on screen presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger throwing out film after after film throughout the 1980s, it was only ever a matter of time before a film came from him with a link between Russia and the USA. In Red Heat, the two different styles of policing combining in this film. The Plot Captain Ivan Danko is a Russian cop chasing down a notorious drug and crime lord, Viktor Rostavili, known as Rosta. Rosta escapes to Chicago, and Danko pursues him, being teamed up with Chicago cop Detective Sergeant Art Ridzik, who is also on Rosta's tail following a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Its an Arnie movie...nuff said! (253 words)
by - written on 23/02/01 (Very useful, 31 readings)
Rating:

This is a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger... Do I need to carry on? Surely the rest of this review is now pointless as you know exactly what to expect from this movie. Sadly there is nothing I can write which is going to shock you or anybody else - this is an Arnie flick with no added bells or whistles. The 'plot' of the movie is this: Schwarzenneger plays a Russian agent who is trying to track down a big player in drug trafficking who is presently operating in Chicago. Upon landing in the USA he is forced to team up with a scruffy streetwise cop in the form of James Belushi and together they try to apprehend this criminal. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Red Heat (DVD): Red Heat (240 words)
by - written on 04/08/01 (Very useful, 20 readings)
Rating:

Schwarzenegger stars as a Soviet policeman in the slightly more conciliatory, if no less stereotypical "Red Heat". He teams up with the sardonic James Belushi as they attempt to track down a particularly nasty drug runner. Even for 1988, this concept of mismatched cops was nothing new, and director Walter Hill stages the film much in the mould of his hit "48 Hours". Arnie and Belushi trade insulting quips about their respective cultures, which inevitably boils down to the stopping power of their guns. Filled with tough action, the film kicks off in Russia (it was actually shot in Red Square - a first for a US production). There we ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Red heat (144 words)

Rating:

Red heat star the action king Arnie, in this movie he plays a russian policeman, rather well to. He is involved in a drug heist in russia involving a well known nut and dealer, it turns into a mini war and arnies partner gets killed, the russian flees to America and Arnie follows. He is teamed up with an American cop played by James Belushi, and the trail to destruction starts, lots of lovely fighting scenes and gun fights, and plenty of chases. It`s quite a good film with Arnie doing some good acting. James Belushi has been under rated as an actor but I think he is a really good one. Well the film ends as predicted and Arnie goes back to Russia leaving a trail of ...  Read the complete review
