Advantages: Special FX, Cool bouncy pod thing (we all want one)

Disadvantages: Where's the plot?, Cardboard actors, Very, very, very predictable

How many sci-fi efforts have you seen where you think 'shame about special effects budget'? It's quite startling to have the reverse here.

With the amount of high quality science fiction that is being written, it's astonishing to find a high-budget film with such a lack of plot, let alone direction. Full credit to the special effects team though; they are excellent (except for Mars with clouds...thought it didn't have an atmosphere??) Or was that a plot flaw (not to give away too much!

Fully predictable and little-explored relationships. Admittedly, it's difficult to develop these when the token female isn't even on the same planet (literally).

Also it's a shame about the acting and cliched lines "No! I won't leave you behind even though the whole of mankind is at risk..." type thing.

You get the gist. It'll be everything you expect.

If you watch the movie again, you'll realize Mars has clouds because of terraforming.

More detail would help but I agree with you, this film was very disappointing and one of the worst I've seen so far this year.
