Advantages: Action , Suspense, Dragons
Disadvantages: Not many dragons, Director is bored
The year is 2020 and every city is decimated! Mankind lives in huddled communities all over the world striving each day to survive and outlive their nemesis the dragons.
Yes that is correct ladies and gents you see 18 years before, during the building of a new underground station in London, mankind?s worst nightmare was awoken. You see Dragons were not myths! They were just sleeping and when they woke up they got hungry! Very hungry! Once the first Dragon had awakened within a year a thousand more had made their presence felt worldwide. Within ten years the dragons had destroyed every major city on the planet. The governments of the world were in disarray and most of the armed forces were decimated while the dragons turned everything to ash. By that I do not mean every animal I mean every single living organism. You name it and the dragons will destroy it. All that?s left is ash!
You see the dragons life cycle works like this eat, sleep, wake, eat. However you have to remember that the Dragons last venture out into the world was when they ate the dinosaurs, which was a couple of million years ago. So it is a pretty long sleep. While they are sleeping the planets ecology redevelops and then boom the dragons come out to play again.
Quinn (Bale), who was at ground zero when the first dragon awoke in 2002, is the leader of a small enclave in Northumberland. They have just lost contact with the Edinburgh enclave and their only real hopes lie in making sure they can stay hidden and survive long enough for the dragons to start eating each other. There have been no signs of outsiders and then into the area come a group of Americans sporting enough equipment to start a small war. This group is led by Van Zan (McCounaghey) a self professed Dragonslayer. He is a man with a dream, a man with a goal and he doesn?t care how he achieves it. He will be the catalyst that could save the community or be responsible for the total a
nnihilation of the last dregs of humanity.
So there?s the premise for the film but what you want to know is the movie any good? In all honesty I am still undecided. The movie was enjoyable, good premise; some excellent acting and the dragons are just fantastic. However the director (Rob Bowman) seems to be on holiday. His direction is all over the place to say the least. Some of the sequences are absolutely magnificent, others just leave you untouched. The film at some level is not cohesive and this lets it down quite seriously.
The visualisation of survival in the year 2020 is marvellous, ash is everywhere, and there is no hint of colour at all. To the outside world it is all shades of grey. The gear and equipment the survivors use is virtually all army surplus. You know the sort of stuff don?t you? Tough, durable and you wouldn?t be caught in it unless the world was ending. Resources are limited so you see a broad mix of the best of modern gear mixed in with equipment from medieval times. Although I must say I wonder where Van Essen got his axe from? You do get a true feeling of the decimation that has been done to the world. Hope is a bit short handed round the place to say the least. Survival is all that matters.
Quinn and Van Zan are made quite believable by the performances of Bale and McCoughnahey their differences of opinion on how to survive the Dragons makes the film more believable. These two people will never like one another they are two diametrically opposed. In the end it is circumstance that forces them to work together to save the day and themselves. Quinn has seen the full horror of what is out there due to his experience as a child. He teaches the children of the enclave a mantra by which to live:
?What do you each day?
Watch the Sky?
What do you do when you sleep?
Keep one eye on the sky?
If they come?
If HE Comes?
A mantra he bel
ieves in whole-heartedly! Van Zan on the other hand is a dynamo. He knows there is a chance for mankind to fight back! He has proven that dragons can be killed and has the equipment and the men to do it. He has the means! He has a goal (see the film to find out) and he will succeed by any means necessary.
The other factor that?s to the detriment of the film is budgetary constraints. I got the feeling Buena Vista did not really have a lot of faith in the movie when it was in production. As an example, in any other movie of this type you would have some footage of the Dragons destroying the world. Which is the impression you get from the posters that are stuck up all over Liverpool. This is not so this is covered by a monologue explaining how the dragons were like swarms of locusts and such like.
Overall Reign of Fire is an impressive film! But it could have been so much better than what it was. It does hook the audience. The story is quite well thought out. The acting is excellent. Dragons wonderful. It is so sad it did not get that final bit of polish that could have made it a really good film. But don?t let my comments put you off ladies and gentleman go out and see for yourself and sit back relax and enjoy the carnage unfold.
