Resident Evil: Apocalypse (DVD)
Advantages: Faithful to the games....
Disadvantages: Too faithful to the games and forgets it is supposed to be a movie!
Apocalypse is the second movie in the Resident Evil franchise and sets everything back beyond anything the first film managed to achieve! Where as that showed that films based on computer games really can be successful, this sequel shows that followng a game toooo closely can also sign its death knell....
The story begins where the first film ended with Alice waking up in an abandoned hospital, walking outside and picking a shotgun out of a crashed Police car and realising that the whole of Racoon City has been infected by the T-virus created by Umbrella. Zombies walk the streets but worse than that, her old friend Matt has been genetically altered to create Nemesis; a walking hulk of a creature, armed with rocket launchers, whose sole aim is to seek out and destroy any surviving members of the S.T.A.R.S team from the first film.
Meanwhile evacuation procedures are taking place at the outskirts of the city. Enter Jill Valentine, a member of S.T.A.R.S, who wears very little and walks about blasting the undead with her guns. When she learns that Umbrella intends to nuke the city, she teams up with Alice and a small band of survivors in a bid to escape before the bombs are dropped. But first, if they want safe passage, they must locate Angela ~ the daughter of one of the vscientists responsible for the outbreak~ who has promised to help them get past the city limits.
Apocalypse tries so hard to work but ultimately fails because it attempts to please too many people at once. It's attempt to appeal to both movie fans and gamers falls on flat ground and Jill Valentine, for example, is given so little back-story by missing her out of the first flm that my wife, who hasn't played the games, repeatedy had to ask me "Who is that exactly?" True, she looks the part down to the shoirt skirt and blue top but the actress who nplays her either isn't accomplished enough to pull it off or the script is so bad that it refuses to do her justice. More like a combination of the two!
Nemesis is awesome but takes up too little screen time seeing as how he was the cliff-hanger that the last film ended on and is beaten waaay too easily even though Alice has been genetically modified herself to make her tougher! As a game, and this film is based on a combination of Resident Evils 2 and 3 just as the first film was a combination of 1 and 2, it would work and all come together. As a film it all feels like a mess.
And let's not even talk about the awful, contrived and clumsy ending.....
It is a crying shame because Resident Evil showed so much promise but the only good things about this film are Jill Valentine's short skirts, even though they do look out of place and wholly inappropiate for zombie survival, and Milla Jovovich!
Skip this and jump to number 3 instead!
Summary: Racoon City falls to the zombie plague!
