Rating:

Bob Rueland (David Duchovny) is a happily married man, who enjoys his job as a building contractor in Chicago. His wife Elizabeth (Joely Richardson) is a successful zoologist and has achieved reasonable greatness in her study of captive Apes. One night after a fund raiser for Elizabeth's zoo, they are involved in a tragic car accident, Bob survives but unfortunately Elizabeth doesn't, but in his moment of sorrow he agrees for her organs to be used for transplants. Meanwhile, seriously ill Grace Briggs (Minnie Driver), a waitress at an Irish-Italian restaurant, gets the news she has been waiting to hear for ages, a heart had finally become available for her life saving ...  Read the complete review

Cynics Beware! (1026 words)
by - written on 09/09/02, updated on  16/09/02 (Very useful, 80 readings)
Rating:

Love is many things to many people. To the optimist, Love is patient, kind, eternally innocent, forever unfolding and inextricably bound with Faith, Hope and Fate. To the cynic, love is only an illusion at best. This film is definitely Not for a cynical audience. Return to Me recalls a more naive era, both in the film industry and in the lives of those who watch this film. Like the naive romances in the earlier years of film, "Return to Me" is refreshingly honest, simple, and endearing. Can you remember a time when simply holding the hand of someone you loved was enough to fill your heart with peace and satisfaction? Can you remember becoming ...  Read the complete review

Sweet, funny comedy (281 words)
by - written on 11/10/08 (Very useful, 11 readings)
Rating:

Return to Me is a sweet film, which has been sadly overlooked by many movie fans. It is centred around Bob (David Duchovny), an architect who is struggling to come to terms with the recent death of his beloved wife, and Grace (Minnie Driver), a cheerful waitress trying to get used to life after a heart transplant. The movie opens with Bob and his zoologist wife Elizabeth enjoying an evening together at a fundraiser for her work. On the way home, they are involved in a car accident where Elizabeth is killed. The movie then cuts to a seriously ill Grace, who is lying in hospital in desperate need of a heart transplant. Her wish soon comes true, and she undergoes ...  Read the complete review

Return to Me (DVD): Return To Me (2000) Mending broken hearts (215 words)
by - written on 29/06/00, updated on  29/06/00 (Very useful, 22 readings)
Rating:

Return To Me is the kind of movie you expect to snigger at cynically then you enter the cinema but instead sigh wistfully on the way out. The story is simple: recently bereaved engineer (David Duchovny, surprisingly endearing) falls for Grace (Minnie Driver, perky and witty as usual) without knowing that she is the recipient of a heart transplant from his tragically killed wife. The story, although credibly enough told despite the preposterous premise, serves only as a background for the mouth-watering performances. Bonnie Hunt and James Belushi (where was he hiding in the last few years?) are brilliant as always as Grace?s best friends and the great ensemble of old ...  Read the complete review
