Rhod Gilbert is a pretty new comedian to grace the stages, but he's no amateur. You might have seen him on Live at the Apollo, or on talk shows and he's probably best famed for his bit on the torches with the power of a million candles. I know that's my favourite bit.
Rhod Gilbert and the Award Winning Mince Pie is his first live DVD, and the entire show is, in a way, one long story detailing how he came to own this award-winning mince pie. The show takes us to gas stations, and Afghanistan, duvet shops and the fictional Llanbobl in Rhod's signature rant style. The comedy is brilliant and you're guaranteed a laugh every time.
That's the thing i love most about Rhod is how he can find anything to complain about, in his rough voice adds perfect tonality to it. he made a switch to observational comedy and it's really working for him - it's the little things in life that are the funniest, as some of the world's greatest comedian have taught us, and Gilbert's jumped on that wagon and complained the whole ride there. He's an absolute riot to watch, so I'd highly recommend this.
The DVD features the hour and a bit long show, as well as some pretty good special features like this infamous "lost luggage" routine which always cracks me up, and a mockumentary where he takes you around his fictional home town of Llanbobl.
A great way to spend an hour and a bit, if you're looking for some comedy, this is what to buy.
Do you know what a Tog rating is????
well you probably won't enjoy this dvd much.
But if, like me, you have no idea what measurement of warmth a tog equals stick around.
Rhod Gilbert is best known to many as the guy in the visit Wales ads and won recognition at both the Royal Verity Performance and on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow
In our house we have been fans before we knew who he was, he was the funny welsh announcer on Paramount comedy for about six months four years ago we were hooked then and we have every youtube clip bookmarked (we not not stalkers but comedy is something we take seriously in our house.) and well worn copies of his tv appearances on Mock The Week, So you can imagine the joy when we saw he had a dvd out.
Gilbert's comedy is not always easy, he rants and raves and this may put some people off but he is not Freddie Star. You're not being invited to laugh uncomfortably at the slightly deranged man but join him in his rage against the craziness oh modern living. For example WHAT IS A TOG? I am an educated woman but I have no idea. A school system that taught me what the different sizes of champagne bottles were called did not teach me how many Togs a quilt should be, I know you pick it up, of course you do and common sense leads you to think a lower number for the warmer months etc but the point stands how we are expected to know these things? and in a world that doesn't tell you how warm your bed is but tells you who is the manager in a service station at midnight is and how long before toilets are next cleaned. A world that won't tell you what award, and from whom, the Award wining mince pie received.
No wonder he prefers to lived in a made up world.
if you like funny quick and challenging humor you will love this
Rhod Gilbert is a multi-award winning Welsh comedian and the 'Award-Winning Mince Pie' is his debut stand up DVD. I first came across this comedy sensation on 'Live at the Apollo' on BBC1 and have since seen him on panel shows such as Mock the Week. His observational humour combined with his passionate fast paced rants makes such good viewing.
The show is based around Rhod's constant battle with trying to understand everyday life and culminates in him describing his stand off at Nutsford Service Station. He had only stopped off late one night after a gig to use the toilets and found the big clock that counted down to the next cleaning cycle. Not only that but he then goes on to describe how he had to rate the facilities afterwards using a smiley face rating system.
As the show unravels, it builds in pace and covers a variety of the big disappointments that Rhod has experienced. He describes these experiences with such humour and covers trying to order a bed from Dreams, turning 41 and presenting a corporate awards ceremony for Butchers Shop of the Year.
Rhod goes onto explain that you can buy all sorts of rubbish in service stations including a Directors chair, a two man tent and a torch with the power of a million candles. It becomes apparent that Rhod's fictitious breakdown in the service station that night was the result of a lack of customer care regarding an award-winning mince pie.
The show concludes with Rhod sat in his Directors chair in the middle of the stage reading a letter. This letter was in response to his sarcastic customer comment card left for the Manager at Nutsford Service Station. The letter is about three pages and is very funny making reference to a number of the jokes in the show.
This is one of my favourite stand up DVDs and as a result, I am going to see Rhod on tour later this year. His style is very unique and his dry sense of humour never fails to make me laugh. I would recommend watching as this will definitely brighten up your day.

Rhod gilbert is a up and coming welsh comedian and this is his first stand up DVD release. filmed in 2009 at the bloomsbury theater , rhod and his award winning mince pie tell the story of his breakdown at knutsworth services and how he came to be in that state. although that sounds quite depressing for a stand up show , his anger, passion and his welsh accent make it very enjoyable.
As i said he is a welsh comedian who has appeared on the royal variety show, mock the week, live at the appolo and comedy roadshow. Rhod has a act which is fast paced and you really do need to pay attention to keep up with the story links and jokes, there are sections when he does talk very fast in the heat of the moment and this is hilarious.
Rhods stand up is quite strange, i feel he's one of those comedians you need to be in the mood to watch otherwise it doesnt have a true effect. The jokes arent laugh out loud funny (to me anyway) but they make you chuckle as he goes along aggreing with all his observations he makes. His jokes are realistic and based on his observations around the time leading up to knutsworth services, notable joke sections are the taliban phoning his mum, tog rating system , light of a million candles and the feedback at service stations. Noticing the 15 rating i should mention his jokes arent dirty, the rating is down to swears , this is down to the welsh accent and the act he puts up.
The dvd features a spinning waiters plate with a mince pie on top, the 4 options turn around this every few seconds so you have to be quick. The 4 sections are play, scenes, extras and support(subtitles and such).
The extras are his famous luggage section where he talks about how at the airport he found only his luggage handle and the following attempts to talk to customer services.
Back to llanbobl , this is a trip around a town he made up when he was a child.
And outtakes , this features a section before the show where he talks to the audience before the show, the hecklers during and the crowd after.
The subtitles come in english only and the show runs for about an hour and a half.
overall he is a very funny comedian but might not be to everyones taste, dont take this review as your opinion go and check out some of his stuff on youtube and see wether you like it. Also the price of 6 quid is very reasonable for a stand up dvd so your grabbing a bargain too.
Rhod Gilbert and the award-winning mice pie!! quite a strange title that i was certainly intrigued about and eventually made me purchase the item.
Rhod Gilbert is an up and coming welsh comedian from Carmarthen. I saw him live in Bristol 2 years ago and although funny, it was obvious he was not yet ready for the big time. Since then he has toured a lot and shot to fame maily due to his sketch called Luggage (this is an extra on the dvd) in which he tells the story of his trip through an airport and his misfortunes with his luggage.
Rhod also has a very funny radio show on Radio Wales catered for old and young. With this in mind i bought his dvd as something to watch with the folks over christmas. The dvd is set around rhod having a nervous breakdown from travelling around doing gigs and feeling the strain of changing his comedy from surreal to observational. It ends with him sat in one service station arguing over a award winning mince pie! There is a good flowing story with this dvd and the laughs are constant. Rhod has made a fine dvd here .. although not to everyones taste it does cater for most generations and the swearing is not too bad.
I do have to say i watched it straight after michael macntyres dvd and found Rhod to be a little slow paced after.
Thumbs up for this dvd though ... you will enjoy if not just for the extra Luggage segment.
Before becoming more familiar with this comedian I just called him The Funny Angry Welsh Guy. I'd seen him on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow and I think (if my memory serves me right) he appeared on the Edinburgh episode of the series. He did this hilarious sketch about his lost luggage that would reduce even the most straight faced person to tears of laughter! When I saw that he had a DVD coming out I made sure that my Dad got it for Christmas as he is also a fan of Rhod's dry, angry style comedy.
We watched the DVD today and his performance is centered around a story of how he had a personal breakdown in a service station off the M6 all because of an 'Award Winning Mince Pie'. It all sounds very peculiar before you start watching the show then, after many humorous tangents, all becomes clear as Rhod explains about his stint of 'living in the real world' and how ultimately the mince pie incident drives him back to his old life full of make believe in Llanbobl.
For all that Rhod is a very angry man, I wouldn't say that his performance is crude at all (I don't appreciate that type of thing), he doesn't overly swear for no reason (again, I don't like that either) and everyone in the family aged 15 and over (as per the 15 certificate) should enjoy his performance and relate to his observational style comedy.
For anyone who missed his 'Luggage' sketch on TV or for all of you who were hoping to see it again on this DVD, you're in luck! He tells it again in an encore which can be found as an extra on the DVD. This was a nice touch I thought. He explains how he couldn't leave it out because everyone loves it and everywhere he's gone around the world he tells it and blames a different airline every time. Hehe. So funny!
The only complaint I have about the DVD is the odd (but very nice looking) menu. You have to wait for each option to cycle round before you can select it. Which got frustrating when I just couldn't manage to get the remote to cooperate and I had to wait till the option I wanted came round again. Kudos for the experimental efforts Rhod, but nil point for usability!! Sorry!
The runtime is approximately 1 hour and 14 minutes and we bought this from Amazon.co.uk for about £11.
