Advantages: Funny

Disadvantages: Some sections do not work

As well as writing and appearing in such great comedies as The Office and Extras Ricky Gervais also does a stand up act and Fame is the third of these performances to be released on DVD, I saw it last night on E4 and it was very funny indeed.

On stage Gervais is not a joke teller like Peter Kay rather he picks a theme and then talks about it, recounting anecdotes and making observations, his comedy style is to be rather risky and to push the boundaries of what people find acceptable to talk about, he takes you out of your comfort zone in a sardonic and then apologetic manner, as if what he has said was not intended but a slip of the tongue.

This show is very funny although I can imagine some people finding it offensive with some of the content. The theme for this show is Fame and Gervais reflects on his own rise to fame and what it means to him, no one is beyong comment and as such race and disability issues appear quite a lot, he does an excellent sketch on hios reaction when asked to do a benefit gig for obesity which he does not consider a disability more an over eating greed thing however the funniest section for me was when talking about offering to take the autistic son of a neighbour out for the day, the mother sugested the zoo however he takes the boy off to the casino to test out his card counting prowess based on the film.

ot all of the humour works mind, a couple of sections such as the one on ME just got dragged out to far but for me the laughs did out weigh the silences by a long way and I would certainly watch his live performances again.

Summary: Stand up comedy

I saw a very funny clip ( possibly from this DVD?) where he was talking about arranging his mums funeral, when the vicar asked if he wanted anything special said he told him to tell the mourners his mum was a 'keen racist' and deliberately gave the vicar the wrong name for his brother!
