Risky Business (DVD) ... released 22 February, 1999 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Dubbed, Full Screen, PAL, Widescreen / Little did Tom Cruise know that he would become a box-office superstar after he cranked up some Bob Seeger and played air guitar in his underwear. But there's more to this 1983 hit than the arrival of a hot young star. Making a stylish debut, writer-director Paul Brickman crafted a subtle satire of crass materialism wrapped in an irresistible plot about a crafty high schooler named Joel (Cruise) who goes into risky business with the beguiling prostitute Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) while his parents are out of town. Joel turns his affluent Chicago-suburb home into a lucrative bordello and forms a steamy personal and professional partnership with Lana, but only as long as the two can avoid the vengeful pimp Guido (Joe Pantoliano) and keep their customers happy. A signature film of the 1980s, Risky Business still holds up thanks to Cruise's effortless charm and the movie's timeless appeal as an adolescent male fantasy. --Jeff Shannon

This is such a brilliantly funny film. It's not laugh out loud funny but an understated funny. One with clever humour and witty one liners. Much better than the teen comedies made today. Gone is the toilet humour and having sex with pies, and back is the clever comedy which is thought out in detail and doesn't rely on character clichés to get by. You see Joel ...more

Rating:

You might not like him now, but if you were of a certain age during the 1980's you will have loved him; Tom Cruise is an actor who has continuously delivered throughout his career, even the movies that nobody liked still took money, but back when every Cruise movie was a gem, Risky Business was the best of his early works. When you're a kid your hopes and aspirations are to be SOMEBODY, Risky Business takes this thought and flips it on an access you might not expect. Risky Business all round for this movie however, director Paul Brickman took a chance on an actor nobody knew (although The Outsiders had been made it was not released) whilst also addressing a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Risky Business (DVD): Amazing iconic 80s teen drama - how they all should be done (579 words)
by - written on 31/08/09 (Very useful, 21 readings)
Rating:

A film which started Tom Cruise off on his path to Hollywood stardom, Risky Business is an epic teen comedy with some dark moments and some pure iconic moments. Cruise is Joel Goodson. He's 17, a good guy and an intelligent guy and when his parents go away on a five day holiday they trust him to keep the house exactly as they left it. As soon as they're gone though, he's dancing around in his white underpants to 'Old Time Rock n Roll' and creating an iconic moment in film history while he's at it. His best friend Miles (Curtis Armstrong) tells Joel he should use the opportunity of an empty house to lose his virginity and tells him to call up a prostitute. ...  Read the complete review

Who Hates Tom Cruise? (841 words)

Close your eyes and think of Saturday night- you're bored, you have nothing to do so you decide to settle in and watch a great, enjoyable movie. However you have a choice, between "real" (often depressing) and longwinded films like Gladiator, Pearl Harbour and LOTR (that are often boring and don't bode well for repeated viewing) or you could choose movies like There's Something About Mary, Jackie Brown, Out Of Sight and Risky Business that keep their tongue in their cheeks. It has to be the latter category, I'm afraid. Movies like LOTR, while boasting epic scales and huge budgets aren't a load of popcorn fun and laughs. This is what I want ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Risky Business (DVD): Cruise Control! (1026 words)

Joel ( Tom Cruise) Goodson: Some of the girls are wearing my mother's clothing. Lana: What's wrong with that? Joel Goodson: I just don't want to spend the rest of my life in analysis There's a line in this seminal and smart little teen movie from the 1980s where a very young Tom Cruise asks co-star Rebecca de Mornay at the end of the film where they will be in ten years time. For Tom it would be number one in the billboard chart with 'The Firm', for Rebecca it was a small credit on the TV show The Outer Limits. Cruise had that effect on his co-stars and so charismatic was that dazzling smile that he pretty much stole every movie he was in back ...  Read the complete review
