Rob Roy (DVD) ... Lange ... / DVD released 01 February, 2000 at MGM Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, Full Screen, PAL, Widescreen / One of the most invigorating period adventures to hit the big screen in decades, this lavish, brilliantly directed film drew critical and audience raves when it was released in 1995. Inspired by historical fact and larger-than-life legend, the intelligently scripted story takes place in Scotland in 1713, when Highland farmer and clan leader Rob Roy MacGregor (Liam Neeson) is forced to borrow money from the duplicitous aristocrat Marquis of Montrose (John Hurt) to help his clan survive a harsh winter. When Montrose's vile henchman (Tim Roth) schemes to dishonour MacGregor and his wife (Jessica Lange) and take the money for himself, the rugged Highlander must take courageous action to preserve his integrity. What follows--along with some of the finest sword-fighting ever filmed--is a tale of courage and valour destined to become an enduring movie classic. Tim Roth received a well-deserved Oscar nomination (for Best Supporting Actor) for his indelible performance as the foppish but deadly villain Cunningham, and both Neeson and Lange bring an earthy, sensual quality to their passionate roles. Boasting a wealth of breathtaking scenery and high-intensity action, Rob Roy is further blessed by a splendid supporting cast (including Brian Cox and Eric Stoltz), and the lush soundtrack by Carter Burwell strikes a perfect balance of romanticism and vigorous dramatic energy. --Jeff Shannon

FILM REVIEW ONLY ~~~~~~~~~ ~ ~ Rob Roy MacGregor is a legendary figure in Scottish history, immortalised forever in the famous novel of the same name by Sir Walter Scott published in 1817. Scott’s novel is probably the main reason he’s a legendary figure in Scottish history, as in reality he was a simply a clan chief from around Stirling, (the old Scot’s capital) who supported the cause of the Stuarts (Jacobites) in the 1715 rising against the Crown, and who had a penchant for cattle rustling and general mischief making. ~ ~ Mind you, viewing the 1995 movie “Rob Roy” by Scots director Michael Caton-Jones, with the brilliant Irish actor Liam ...  Read the complete review

The problem with making a historical tale into a film is that it is always going to be a compromise. What makes a good tale is not often what makes a good film and vica versa. It is easy to take the main subject and polarise it so that the characters are either good or bad, heroes or villians and history portrayed in terms that are too clear cut. Films such as Braveheart and The Patriot were guilty of this only American Civil War saga Glory managed to lay out some balance in its undertaking. Rob Roy would always be a difficult subject to make into a balanced film. In an age when alleigence and politics was the road to success, the historical Rob Roy MacGregor was an ...  Read the complete review
