ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK was the first rock and roll movie, and was directed in 1956 by Fred Sears. It tells a somewhat fictional version of the story behind the rise of rock and roll, concentrating mainly on Bill Haley And His Comets. Johnny Johnston stars as Steve Hollis, a record promoter who just happens to stop by a small town where he discovers Bill Haley and his band playing. Hollis is bowled over by the sound and figures that he can make a mint if he supports them. He also falls in love with one of the band’s dancers Lisa, played by Lisa Gaye. Although the story is fictional, the theme is true to life and the music is phenomenal. Rock and roll wasn’t exactly born with this film, but it certainly helped it along the way. The movie also includes music from The Platters and Freddie Bell & The Bellboys. A fun movie, and one to watch the next time it’s shown on TV.
