Rocky is one of those films that mostly everyone has seen and mostly everyone loves, yes we all know it has its flaws and yes we all know that Sylvester Stallone isn't the worlds greatest actor (he was nominated though for an oscar) but who cares - Rocky is one of those archetypal feel-good films that will keep you as the viewer excited, cheering and happy all the way to the closing credits. A lot of stick goes to Sylvester for his acting but i personally think he suited the part perfectly - i mean he wrote the damn character! and you might say he wasn't great in it but there aren't many other actors who you can say they played a role so well that it's difficult to seperate the actor from the character.
On top this film is just a underdog success story the likes of which we have heard and seen portrayed in films for decades but beneath this is a true love story between Rocky and Adrian and this is what adds the humanity and emotion to the story and a whole lot of depth to the character of Rocky. The end scene in Rocky where he is announced the loser to Apollo Creed and all he wants his Adrian is one of my favourite scenes in film, it shows that Rock wasn't really in it for the boxing and winning wasn't the only reason he got up in the morning and trained that. This sub plot gives Rocky the emotional back bone that elevates it from above average sports movie to class A film masterpiece featuring some incredibly recognizable scenes and characters Rocky is so much more than what it appears to be.
Some of you on here may give it stick - yeah its no Bicycle Thieves and its not Citizen Kane but that doesn't matter - this is one of the finest examples of a feel good movie i can think of a definitely deserves a place on my list.
