Advantages: Acting and soundtrack
Disadvantages: Slower and less Rocky action
After coming out of retirement in the previous installment of this popular boxing series, he is back in the life of luxury at the beginning of this film. This soon turns sour however and Rocky is once again looking to raise money on the streets of Philadelphia.
After his best friend Paulie manages to sign Rocky's fortune away him and his wife are forced to move back to the streets where they began in the first film all that time ago. Adrian fears that Rocky will kill himself if he continues to fight and prevents him from returning to the ring to earn some extra cash. Rocky takes to training down at Mickey's old gym and it is here where the focus of this film begins. At the club Rocky meets a young, powerful boxer Tommy Gunn. Rocky befriends him and trains him to become a real contender for the world title. This is at the expense of his teenage son, who tries to impress his dad, but to no avail as he focuses on his protege Tommy. When Tommy's feet get too big for his boots Rocky is forced into another brawl, however this time there's no ref to stand in and save him.
Although this film is not generally regarded as a highlight of the series it still has a lot to offer and delivers plenty more morals to the audience. Without Rocky as the primary fighting focus the film loses some of the magic which previous entries in the franchise had. The acting is again of high quality and once again the soundtrack delivers the goods as it had done so effortlessly on each film before it. This is not classic Rocky but it is certainly worth watching if you're a fan of the series. I wouldn't recommend watching this as a newcomer, but certainly endorse the series starting from the beginning as it is truly one of the best franchises in movie history.
Summary: A decent fifth installment, but without the magic of the previous films
