With it being a relatively boring weekend there seemed like nothing better to do than stick on a film to watch to pass the hours. I had in mind something quite easy to watch, no intense storyline just a good old comedy which would pass by quickly with no stressful plot. It then came to mind that I had still not seen 'Role Models' which I had been wanting to see ever since I had heard about it and with all my friends recommending it to me and telling me how good it was I really had to see it for myself.
The film pretty much begins right away and you know its going to be a comedy just by the way it starts. We are introduced to Danny (Paul Rudd) who seems like the central character, he and his friend Wheeler (Seann William Scott) work for Minotaur an energy drink. They basically go around the surrounding schools promoting the energy drink so that kids will opt for this drink rather than taking drugs. They drive around in a Minotaur shaped van and make quite the statement but Danny is fed up of his job, he is stuck in a rut and after ten years of doing this just wants more from life. Wheeler, on the other hand is still living a careless life all about the women, with this easy job and no real commitments.
There is a surprise party for Danny when he gets to work which is to celebrate his ten years to the company but for him this just seems even more depressing and his girlfriend Beth (Elizabeth Banks) is there but she doesn't seem to understand why Danny is so down. From this party onwards Danny and Beth's relationship seems to be getting worse with his negativity which leads to him thinking a proposal will fix everything but in reality she wants to move out of their house together after seven years. The next day at work Danny is at a school but is far from promoting the Minotaur drink when he gives a speech to the kids about how depressing life is and that they should take drugs. Their van is almost getting towed away which then leads to the pair driving it up the school statue.
With Beth thankfully being a lawyer she is able to help the guys out but this involves instead of 30 days in prison they have to do 150 hours community service at a local community called 'Sturdy Wings'. This place is for people who are a bit different and need a buddy to make them feel like they have someone to talk to. The founder is quite eccentric but pairs the men up with suitable children which she thinks they will get on well with but is quite clear that if it doesn't work out she doesn't mind sending the men to prison to finish their sentence. Danny is paired with Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) who is your typical geek, he is very much into live battles in a community which is almost like Lord of the Rings where they dress up old fashioned and talk in old fashioned speech and have battles with the different countries. He is a bit of a loner.
Wheeler on the other hand is paired with a little boy called Ronnie (Bobb'e J.Thompson) this boy has quite the mouth on him for a boy of his age and is obsessed with women, swearing and has a bit of an attitude. Most of the people who have been paired with him have given up so Wheeler has a bit of a challenge here.
This film is quite different from what I had expected, I knew it was going to be really funny but wasn't sure exactly what it was about. The cast made me realise the humour was going to be quite blunt and obvious so if you don't like high school type crude humour then you will definitely not like this. If you're easily offended by silly comedies again this won't be for you but if you have liked previous Seann William Scott films such as 'American Pie' or the likes of that then you will love this.
The cast were good on this film, Seann William Scott didn't seem to change much from his usual role of a guy that likes to pick up women and be a bit sleazy act. Paul Rudd was a bit different here he was more serious and had a bit more depth to his character where you almost sympathise which was nice to see.
I really liked the Augie character as well Christopher Mintz-Plasse is kind of unfortunate in that his whole image can't steer him much further than to play a role of an outsider/geek but in this film he was stronger than usual and seemed to take control and open up more. Bobb'e J.Thompson was brilliant as Ronnie, he really made the film as I was so in shock at this boy who looked so innocent talking like he did but his and Seann's onscreen partnership is really successful.
If you are looking for a film which will make you laugh and genuinely cheer you up if you are having a boring day then this is ideal. I was bored one afternoon and after watching this it went really quickly, made me laugh and brightened up my mood. It doesn't take a lot of concentration and isn't too predictable. It lasts approximately 1 hour 40 minutes but doesn't feel like it.
The film is available to buy on DVD FOR £10.98 on Amazon.co.uk . It is a certificate : 15

- 17/08/09 I loved this film, largely because Seann William Scott is almost my ideal man, but it was funny and entertaining too. |
