Rollerball (DVD) ... DVD released 08 March, 2004 at Uca Catalogue / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / This Rollerball, a 2002 remake of the excellent 1975 original, is one of the most notorious failed would-be blockbusters of recent years. Chris Klein struggles as Jonathon Cross, star of the violent game of the title, a mixture of speedway, hockey and rollerskating for the WWF generation. Perfunctory support comes from Rebecca (X Men) Romijn-Stamos, while Jean Reno is the promoter prepared to sacrifice player's lives for TV ratings. The remake could not be more different from the original in tone, as formal elegance is replaced by a cacophonic heavy metal soundtrack and MTV-style editing that makes the games impossible to follow. Set in the present, this Rollerball ironically fulfils the original's suggestion that the near future would be a big business, media-dominated world of blood and circuses. The film's best asset is relocating the story in a crumbling and corrupt Russia, a world sufficiently alien to have a genuinely science fictional resonance; the elaborate production design and wild profusion of costumes suggest post-communism, post-modern, global melting pot freefalling out of control, paying homage to Ridley Scott's seminal Blade Runner (significantly, perhaps, LL Cool J's character is called Ridley). Not quite as disastrous as expected, one still wonders how John (Die Hard) McTiernan made an action thriller this mediocre. On the DVD: Rollerball's commentary by Chris Klein, LL Cool J and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos is jokey, amiable and reveals plenty of filmmaking trivia without offering anything substantial. The "Rollerball Yearbook" presents text profiles of the four teams and 11 key players linked to "highlights", i.e., montages taken from the film of the participants. This also has sections on six areas of the "Roller Dome" and three sections on "Game Gear", which amounts to a photo gallery of costumes, masks and bikes. Also included is the theatrical trailer and trailers for three other SF movies. The anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer is excellent, and the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound is suitably dynamic and raucous. There are subtitles in six languages as well as English and English for Hard of Hearing, while the disc also contains French and Spanish dubs of the main feature. --Gary S Dalkin

 ... one of the games a player gets injured (a metal ball to the face ... ouch!) and the owner sees his money increasing as more blood is shed. Which starts a game of destruction with fixed accidents, escapes for freedom and promises that where meant to be broken. Firstly let me say we wanted to watch a film that was exciting and had plenty of action, so for me this film was perfect. The very first scene was brilliant with lots of action introducing Jonathon as a risk taking adrenaline junkie. Yeah there where a few flaws ...more

Crowned Review Rollerball (DVD): Roll On Full Time (752 words)

Rating:

Rollerball (2002) *film only review On February 1st 2007, Rollerball was placed at number 99 on the IMDB’s bottom 100 films, with an average score of 2.6 out of 10, and 8,205 votes. That’s a very high number of votes for the bottom 100, strengthening its position there, and showing just how badly this film has been received. Set in the near future, a violent new sport from Central Asia has taken the world’s interest. Rollerball is like a cross between American football and basketball, on rollerblades, in a figure 8 circuit, and chuck in a couple of motorbikes for good measure. The rules are simple, and the fouls are frequent. Increasing ratings and ...  Read the complete review

~~~Rollerball~~~ Jonathon is the star of a violent, game of human pinball. Picked because of his love of extreme sports he is joined by old friend Marcus Ridley and a team of other adrenaline junkies. Thrust into the public eye as the star of the show he is enjoying the high life with fame and wealth. Which is guaranteed if he plays by the rules. Which is to win the game and make the owner lots of money with over the top dramatics and daring stunts. But when blood is shed the game hots up, and only the fittest will survive ... ~The cast: Chris Klein ~ Jonathon Cross LL Cool J ~ Marcus Ridley Rebecca Romijn ~ ...  Read the complete review
Go on ... think about it ... what was the most memorable thing about the recent Premiership match between Arsenal and Manchester United? It wasn't the dazzling goals (were there any?), or the decent football, or the chanting of the crowd ... no what got the blood bubbling, the adrenaline flowing and (definitely) the newspaper headlines was the bad tempered bickering and argy bargy between the players ... that's what we'll remember and also incidentally one of the main reasons why we tune in so regularly to see big football matches ... it's the knife edge of tension, the passionate tempers and the knowledge that at any meeting some of these highly paid ...  Read the complete review
Set in the future, (well, 3 years from now) we are meant to believe that there will be a mad game springing up in the Asian countries of the world called Rollerball. Well, that is what this remake of a cult 1970's film is leading you to believe. With the changing outlook of modern Earth, the makers of this remake have changed many of the backgrounds, senarios and situations while leaving the underlying story intact. If you have not seen the 1970's version, I highly recommend it. Better than the remake due to its 70's chique! Anyway, back to the new film. ********* DONT READ THE PLOT IF WANT TO SEE IT************** The story ...  Read the complete review
Rollerball is a movie I expected to hate from looking around at all its reviews. Comments ranged from it being absolutely absymal and unwatchable at worst, to looking like an MTV music video at best which to me doesn't exactly inspire any kind of confidence in it being any good - no doubt to most people. Bizarrely then, despite most of the negative comments I read actually being very true, I still found Rollerball to be rather entertaining - I guess it caught me in an excellent mood, or once again, this is one of those movies that its 'hip to hate' amongst the movie critic community, either way I personally found it to be rather fun. But in no way, ...  Read the complete review
