Advantages: Great cast and some thought provoking scenes
Disadvantages: Too slow and should have been better
Rules of Engagement is one of those films which has an excellent cast and on that fact should do well. In reality films need a good story line as well otherwise it won't do well. This film certainly didnt set the cinema's alight when it was released earlier this year. I am a huge fan of Samuel L Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones. There are also roles for Guy Pearce (LA Confidential) and Ben Kingsley so overall this film has an excellent cast. I missed this one in the cinema because it had mixed reviews. I didnt to catch it on DVD instead. I have to say that the acting in this movie is brilliant. The story line is ok but there just seemed to be something missing which would have made this an excellent movie. The film is based around an incident in Yemen where Samuel L Jacksons character makes a wrong decision and breaks the Rules of Engagement. Tommy Lee Jone's character comes to the rescue and represents Jackson's character in court. There are some very good issues brought up in this movie. The final hour of this movie is basically set in the court room so if you are not a fan of court room dramas then you might find the end of this movie a little disappointing. There are some action scenes in this movie but they all have in the first thirty minutes of the movie. If you are expecting a high paced film then this film is definetely not for you. I have to say that I was a little disappointed by the ending to this movie. I won't give away the ending but it is not a dramatic as I hoped. The films builds up and you expect a good suspenseful ending, and then it just ends. Overall I thought this film was good but it could have been so much better. The actors can not be at fault as they give excellent performances. The story line is ok as well. If you want a thought provoking court room drama then you will like this. If you are after an out and out action movie then you will be very disappointed. Just a little bit
about the DVD. The picture and sound were excellent which you come to expect from recent releases. The extras are not very good though. There are a few documentaries but that is about it. There are not trailers which you would expect even from the most basic of DVDs.
