Rushmore (DVD) ... released 15 June, 2006 at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm / Features of the DVD: PAL / Wes Anderson's follow-up to the quirky Bottle Rocket is a wonderfully unorthodox coming-of-age story that ranks with Harold and Maude and The Graduate in the pantheon of timeless cult classics. Jason Schwartzman (son of Talia Shire and nephew of Francis Coppola) stars as Max Fisher, a 15-year-old attending the prestigious Rushmore Academy on scholarship, where he's failing all of his classes but is the superstar of the school's extracurricular activities (head of the drama club, the beekeeper club, the fencing club...). Possessing boundless confidence and chutzpah, as well as an aura of authority he seems to have been born with, Max finds two unlikely soulmates in his permutations at Rushmore: industrial magnate and Rushmore alumnus Herman Blume (Bill Murray) and first-grade teacher Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams). His alliance with Blume and crush on Miss Cross, however, are thrown out of kilter by his expulsion from Rushmore, and a budding romance between the two adults that threatens Max's own designs on the lovely schoolteacher. Never stooping to sentimentality or schmaltz, Anderson and cowriter Owen Wilson have fashioned a wickedly intelligent and wildly funny tale of young adulthood that hits all the right notes in its mix of melancholy and optimism. As played by Schwartzman, Max is both immediately endearing and ferociously irritating: smarter than all the adults around him, with little sense of his shortcomings, he's an unstoppable dynamo who commands grudging respect despite his outlandish projects (including a school play about Vietnam). Murray, as the tycoon who determinedly wages war with Max for the affections of Miss Cross, is a revelation of middle-aged resignation. Disgusted with his family, his life, and himself, he's turned around by both Max's antagonism and Miss Cross's love. Williams is equally affecting as the teacher who still carries a torch for her dead husband, and the superb supporting cast also includes Seymour Cassel as Max's barber father, Brian Cox as the frustrated headmaster of Rushmore, and a hilarious Mason Gamble as Max's young charge. Put this one on your shelf of modern masterpieces. --Mark Englehart

... happens to be in love with Miss Cross. So plays out the feud between the two and a peculiar love triangle. I found this film to be wonderful and quirky. This was mainly down to the direction of Wes Anderson who has since become familiar for equally quirky work such as The Royal Tenembaums and The Life Aquatic. The script is witty and sharply observed and the film loves at a wonderfully slow pace. Some may find it boring and think nothing happens but if you like this kind of floating movie you are in for a treat. The pe...more

Premium Review Rushmore (DVD): Murray is King! (471 words)

If you've seen any films by Wes Anderson (Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited), then you'll know that he's a curious character, with a very quirky, idiosyncratic sense of humour that, whilst not always great, is certainly unique and unlike anything else pumping through the Hollywood system. And Rushmore, his first majorly acclaimed work, can very well be said to have put him on his current career path, as well as establishing Bill Murray as a darling of independent cinema through the late 90s to present day. It also made lead Jason Schwartzman come to prominence, although a decade later, he still has yet to really make a huge dent ...  Read the complete review

Starring: Jason Schwartzman as Max Fischer Bill Murray as Herman Blume Olivia Williams as Miss Rosemary Cross The Story: Max is a tenth grade student at the prestigious Rushmore Academy, where he presides over virtually every extra curricular activity that exists, and if it doesn’t, he starts a new club or society. He is president of the bee-keeping society, involved in Chess, Latin, Fencing, Kite Flying, Wrestling, Dramatics, and the list goes on. The huge flaw of course in this excessive undertaking of non-academic activities, is that his studies are suffering, and he is under threat of expulsion (he eventually moves to Grover ...  Read the complete review

Well, now I've reviewed the film, I thought I'd let you know what I think of the DVD. Here goes: A good film, but no DVD extras! I bought this film on DVD, but I may as well have got the video and saved some money, being as there is nothing extra other than a chapter list. Thanks to a helpful comment, I’d advice buyers to get the Region 1 version of the film (provided you can play it that is), as the list of extras is huge! Starring: Jason Schwartzman as Max Fischer Bill Murray as Herman Blume Olivia Williams as Miss Rosemary Cross Background (for more detail, read my opinion on the film): ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Rushmore (DVD): rush out for more of this criterion (629 words)

Ah the region 2 dvd market, for all those who don't have a multi-region player you don't know what you miss out on. If you want to see Rushmore on R2 dvd then by all means do so, it has a nice anamorphic picture but no extras of any kind. In Region 1 land you can buy a Criterion edition of the film and it's up to their high standard of dvd. The company basically buys the rights to films and then proceeds to give them excellent video/audio treatments and extras that aren't pointless. Rushmore is about a young teenage boy Max who is a student at Rushmore academy. His extra curricular activities range from being the leader of the drama ...  Read the complete review
