This is probably Kings best story. Unlike his later work this book is much more descriptive and has some classic moments which were never featured in the film/mini series which was first shown in 1979. Many of Kings best stories centre around characters which King can actually relate to. In this case a writer who returns to his home town of Salem in New England planning to write a book.

After having a fair amount of writers block the writer finds that writing about the current goings on in Salem would make a best seller. The book centres on another newcomer an antiques seller and his partner the mysterious Mr Barlow. When a boy goes missing and is found dead and later haunts one of his friend (Mark Petrie), Mark who is fanatical about strange goings on and collects models of monsters is disbelieved. Later other strange happenings all point to the classic sign of Vampires being amongs the midsts of the town, although most of the adults don't believe this is the case. It take the imaginative mind of the writer to discover the true happenings and to discover Mr Barlows true identity.

A classic Vampire story.
