Advantages: Funny, quite original
Disadvantages: Gets repetitive
Samurai Pizza Cats (or SPC to fans) is a little-known Japanese anime that was shown in the UK for the first time in 1991. It's a shame that it's not very popular, as it's a right little gem! The series (which counts 52 episodes) is about a team of superhero cats who, in their spare time, work in a pizzeria. Hence the title. The series isn't all action-based, it's more comical - and it is truly funny! It's been translated very well, and is full of jokes, puns, and one-liners delivered by an underpaid Narrator! The characters are more or less stereotypical - Speedy Cerviche is the leader, and none too bright, Guido Anchovy is the "Don Giovanni" of the 3 and Polly Ester, the only female of the bunch, makes sure that the other 2 behave (a frying pan always does have more than one use...). There are, of course, the baddies too: Seymoure "Big" Cheese, who quite literally explodes when he loses (just about every episode, then), Gerry Atric, the old crow and the Cheese's sidekick, and Bad Bird, no prizes for guessing what he's like. There are many more characters, most of which make regular appearances (like Big Al Dente, the cats' boss, and Princess Violet, the princess of Little Tokyo, where the cartoon is set). So, is it original? Yes - when was the last time you saw 3 pizza-making cats flying to the rescue - but it does get a bit repetitive. Nearly every episode sees the cats destroy the Big Cheese's robot, so the appeal is for the comedy aspect, not the action. All in all then, there is something here for everyone - jokes, action, and great big robots for mecha enthusiasts. It does deserve more attention, but Fox Kids, the channel that owns it seems to have forgotten it exists... shame on you!
