Hilary Faye sees herself as the perfect Christian- endlessly promoting God's message to those around her, and helping (albeit resentfully) her physically disabled brother, Roland (played by Macaulay Culkin- even better with age!). Mary falls back into her normal routine, and even develops a crush on her headteacher's son- new at the school. Howev...more

Premium Review Saved! (DVD): The God Squad is in town (274 words)
by - written on 24/10/08 (Very useful, 12 readings)
Rating:

Saved! is a movie that people will either endlessly chuckle at, or will drive them mad with its 'preachy' characters. Set at a Christian high school, the plot revolves around Mary (Jena Malone) and her friends. Mary is 17, part of the Christian Jewels girl gang, and dating a good, God-fearing boy- Dean. When Dean confesses to her that he thinks he is gay, Mary decides to offer up her virginity to 'save' him. However, Dean is soon sent to a Christian 'rehabilitation' centre when his parents discover his sexuality. Meanwhile, Mary returns to school along with her friend Hilary Faye (Mandy Moore in a comically evil role). Hilary Faye sees herself as ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review God Only Knows What I'd Be Without You (1148 words)

Rating:

Saved! Is the biting and often funny story of a strict Christian school in the United States, where the students are 'down with GOD' and the leading ladies are members of the illusive Christians Jewels. Mary, a born again Christian happily involves herself in the good book, helping charities, organising events and being an all round good girl, but when her boyfriend admits to being gay her world tumbles around her as she tries to convert him, not thinking that she could get herself pregnant in the process…. Hilary Faye is the perfect Christian do gooder, she looks after her physically disabled brother and basically runs the school protecting Jesus' love and spreading it ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Saved! (DVD): Saved! (694 words)

Rating:

Saved! is going to offend some people. It's a shame, as it really shouldn't, but it's an inevitability. Offence really can't be entirely avoided when you have a film set in a Christian high school, and then throw teen pregnancy and homosexuality and a bunch of other issues into the mix. Now assuming one can leave their politics to one side, Saved! is in turns both hilarious and dramatic, while also managing to offer an actual message, something usually missing from the usual parade of similar teen films. The film follows Mary (Jena Malone), a Christian who sleeps with her boyfriend only in an attempt to "save" him from homosexuality. Unfortunately ...  Read the complete review
