Advantages: good story, not one like it
Disadvantages: Goerey in places, annoying ending
A good question, which the jigsaw killer wants to know. This film is without doubt one of the most gruesome films I have ever seen. The killer seeks out victims who he feels don’t value their lfe, he wants them to appreciate life, so what does he do? Well he traps his victims giving them a challenge which usually involves a time limit and if they don’t succeed then they die!
The film starts with Doctor Lawrence Gordon finding himself trapped in a dingy bathroom, chained to a pipe. He finds he’s not the only one there, trapped in there to is another man across the room stuck in the same situation. These men the latest victims of the jigsaw killer. When I watched this film for this first time I remember thinking “what the f**k is going on?” but the film starts to make sense as it goes on.
We find that these men have only 6 hours to get out of there, they find out all this from a tape recorder that’s left in the room with them. Doctor Gordon has to find a way out armed with only a bullet and a hacksaw. He also finds out that his family have been kidnapped and wants to get out for them as much as anything. This film is certainly very different to any I have watched.
The film then develops, showing you why these men have been put there, and as the film goes on there are more clues in the room showing how they can break free. There appears to be a dead man in the middle of the room with them, he was holding the tape recorder, he’s also holding the gun. Doctor Gordon finds he’s faced with the challenge of getting the gun to kill the other man, with the promise of freedom if he succeeds. The gun of course is out of his reach. The only way he can get there is by somehow breaking from the chains with the saw, and driven by time running out and his family being kidnapped, the guy starts to loose his sanity, chopping his leg off! Hence why the films called Saw.
I wont give anymore away because it will ruin it, but lets just say what makes this film is the twist at the end, one that I never expected. I think this film is really good, but there are times when you find yourself turning away because it is so gruesome. I’d defiantly recommend it though, as there isn’t another film quite like it that I’ve ever seen.
Summary: worth buying

- 17/07/06 Sorry but simply re-counting some of the plot doesn't help me make a purchasing decision, I would have preferred to read far more of your opinion//// |

- 17/07/06 I was turning away more because of the laughable incomprehensibility of it all. Far too many plotholes ensure that the twist is not as good as many make it out to be. Saw could have been great, but it's still not all that gory, doesn't live up to the horror potential that surrounded it on it's release and will forever be noted as a poor man's Seven!! and on a final note, it's not all that gory. The self-mutilation via the use of a Saw is rather limp when you consider a similar scene featuring a chainsaw in Evil Dead 2. |
