The first of 5 Saw films. Saw came out in 2004, and I don't think anybody knew just how big it was going to get. The problem with the Saw series, is that you have to have watched all of them to watch one of them, otherwise you can get very confused by what is happening! Also, at the end of each film you have to watch the next one to find otu what is going to happen! Annoying in a way, but also very clever by the film makers!
Plot:
When Adam wakes up in a dark and dingy room with Lawrence, both with shackles on their ankles, and a dead body in the middle of the room, his life comes crashing in around him. And his head is full of unanswerable questions, why is he here? Who is this Lawrence? Why is that guy dead!?
When Lawrence and Adam tell their stories, it turns out they have both been "kidnapped" and taken against their will to this room, and neither of them know how to get out.
When they find tapes in their pockets, and a tape player on the floor with the dead guy, they both find out they are playing a "game" at the hand of the notorious JigSaw, a weirdo who has been striking for months, getting people into these situations and making them kill themselves in horrible ways. He isn't technically a murderer, as he just sets up the situations for them to kill themselves. He always does it to those who have something which they shouldn't have done, whether it's a drug dealer, drug taker, peadophile, rapist etc.
Lawrence and Adam have until 6pm to free themselves, before they're locked in the room to die.
With so many twists and turns, the film keeps you guessing right up until the very last minute, and even right up to the end credits there are twists and turns!
Opinion:
This was the first Saw film, and I have now seen it quite a few times. I like horror films (though I won't watch them on my own!!!!), and the Saw series has become one of my favourites.
As with most films with sequels, the first film is the best, although nothing is really "tied up" at the end, not even the story with Lawrence and Adam really, which is a little annoying as it's kind of like a TV show in that you have to wait for the next episode to discover what happens.
But back to this film in particular. The film isn't particularly "scary", but it is "gruesome" and very blood thristy in parts, and I do find myself holding a pillow over my face over alot of the film!!!!
The storyline is very very interesting, and as I said the twists and turns keep you interested all the way through, it's one of those films which seems to be over when it's only just started because the time just goes nowhere!
It's one of those films which I can watch over and over again as everytime I watch it I get even more insight into the storyline, so much goes on in the film that it is easy to forget what has happened when you have watched it, so it isn't a film that you can only watch once and then get bored.
The only downside to the film, is like I said, you have to watch the rest of the films to finally find out what happens, and even now the fifth in the series doesn't end it all with a final (I think) Saw film coming out on 23rd October 2009 in UK cinemas, it should bring everything together, but 5 years is a hell of a long time to finish off a story! But like I said earlier, this is clever play by the film makers, as if you have watched all of the Saw films, liklihood is you'll want to watch the rest.
Saw is excellent, the characters are played very well by the actors (who are relatively unknown, no Brad Pitt or George Cloony here, meaning they can be much more believable in their parts), the storyline is excellent, and will always keep you guessing.
Definitely a film for all horror/thriller lovers, there is no sci-fi element to the film which is what I like most, it's all real if you know what I mean, it's something which could actually happen, which makes it much scarier, and much more believable! The effects are amazing, which although makes you cringe and squirm in your seat, it's very very clever, and whoever the make-up artists on the film are, they're very very talented!
A wonderful film! :)
Summary: A wonderful film for all horror lovers!
