James Wan directs this horror movie SAW.

The film centres on two men who wake up in a disgusting bathroom tied up. In front of them is Jigsaw played by Tobin Bell who has put them in a position where they have to beg for their lives through a series of gruesome games. Along the way we found out how the men got here and find out that one is a man who cheated on his wife and the other is a private investigator. From here the film focuse son how much pain the men can take and whether they can escape with their lives.

While the premise is so simple it is also so effective. I found that as the film progressed although Jigsaw was scary and vindictive we didn't know whether to support him or the two men as they seemed like lowlifes. Bell is superbly chilling as Jigsaw and runs the film with his psychotic disturbing games. The rest of the cast were good. The use of flashback to see how the characers got there is clever in setting their predicament.

As a horror movie goes this is superb. There is plenty of gore which some may find unpleasant. There is a great sense of foreboding provided by the chilling music and gaps of silence. The action although mainly set in one room never holds up which will cause your nerves to shred. This one setting is so grim that it feels lime a character. I did find some of the secenes a little too disturbing. The ending has a great twist which is shocking and liVES up to the tense nature of the movie.

The DVD extras include a commentary, behind the scenes and deleted scenes.

Lasting just over 90 minutes with a 18 viewing certificate and avaliable from AMAZON at £3.98, this is a classic horror film.
