Scanners is an unusual movie from the now acclaimed director David Cronenberg. Before Cronenberg hit the mainstream his focus was always on horror, shining examples being Shivers and Rabid, both shot in and around Toronto and Montreal, places he considered home. On his first rise of power in the directorial stakes came Scanners, a significantly different horror movie, that seemed dated even from its release. Someone says this films has bad acting and cheap effects. I recommend that person to get their head examined as this film has none of that. If your not familiar with Scanners made in 1981 it by far as many fans will claim David Cronenberg's best movie. Those who don't join CONSEC are destroyed - mind against mind - scanner against scanner. Michael Ironside steals the show as Revok, the ultra nasty, super powerful scanner, who finds himself in opposition to his own brother, Vale Cameron (Stephen Lack). Cameron has been taught to control and manifest his powers by Dr Ruth (a rare appearance of Patrick McGoohan outside of 'The ... Read the complete review

I havent seen this film for years, but it has always stuck in my mind as one of the best horror movies Of my youth. The story is about a group of people who were born with the ability to read and interfere with peoples minds and thoughts. This came about because their mothers were given a drug throughout their pregnancy called "Ephemerol" which altered the unborn childs brain. Unfortunately, unless they took this drug regularly, they could not control this phenomenon and consequently became misfits, dropouts or commited suicide. The main character is hired to infiltrate the company making this drug and flush out the bad guys. One of the ... Read the complete review
