My five year old son is a huge fan of Scooby-Doo he began watching the cartoon on tv and since we have bought him several DVD's. He really enjoys them and in the last year his tv viewing has changed a lot he requires more to keep him interested and Scooby-Doo and the gang with their mysteries certainly do that. My son's absolute favourite DVD he has is Scooby-Doo and the Pirates Ahoy.
The beginning of the story starts with a bit of deep dark mystery as we are introduced to the ghost pirates straight away as they take over a ship sailing the sea. My youngest son (who is nearly four years old) was instantly put off as he deemed it too scary! It then quickly jumps to the usual gang, Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Velma and Daphne boarding a cruise ship with Fred's parents as part of the Jones party. But no sooner are they aboard the ship they find themselves solving a mystery. As always Scooby and Shaggy end up in a chase that leaves my son chuckling. After they have solved the first mystery Fred's parents come clean they are on a mystery cruise as a present for Fred's birthday. After two days they have solved all the mysteries much to the annoyance of the other passengers. But it is when they rescue a man from the water claiming his boat had been tuck over by ghost pirates you begin to know something fun is to come! Ghost Pirates! It isn't long until Scooby and the gang are thrown into solving a mystery. The film does have some catchy music at points when the action packed and fast paced scenes come. The ghost pirates board the cruise ship causing chaos but soon leave kidnapping Fred's parents and the rest of the passengers are nowhere to be seen. So they all along with the man they had rescued Rupert go on a mission to save them. Scooby and Shaggy add humour along the way which I think lightens the mood for my son making it more enjoyable. They catch up with the pirates fairly quickly but what is it the ghost pirates are really after and who are they?
As I have said this is my son's favourite and he has watched it several times since I bought it for him. I have watched it once with him but he was so enthusiastic about the whole thing he had told me the story from start to finish in the first ten minutes. I did enjoy the story though lasting just over an hour long they manage to pack plenty in and keep you on your toes guessing what was going on. My eldest especially finds the chases between the ghost pirates and the gang funny even after watching it numerous times I still see him laughing away at it. And I have to admit to finding it funny too. Scooby-Doo and Shaggy are just the ultimate match aren't they for humour they really haven't lost their touch in these newer stories. As the scenes keep darting from quite bright and cheerful to dark and a little scary my youngest son spent more time behind a cushion! He did enjoy the ending though. For me I have watched it once and enjoyed it as I didn't know entirely what was going on but I don't think I would watch it again. As for my son he is still working bits out every time he watches it.
I purchased my sons copy from our local Tescos store for £3 and it is currently selling on Amazon for the same price. That's value for money I would say. My son loves this one and even though my youngest finds it a bit scary still I am sure he will enjoy it too.
