Advantages: The original and best of the sudden rash of the ironic horror movie genre.

Disadvantages: Too clever to be TOO scary. Although not that clever to be honest.

If you’ve read TOO much about this film, it’ll spoil the little actual enjoyment you’ll get from it (although it’s very good stuff). The book-ends of the movie are choreographed so damn well that it will have you to admit, you want more (although for Christ’s sake, watch them in order or it’ll ruin the experience).

From the brutal slaying of Drew Barrymore’s character to the thrillingly funny finale, Scream proved then that there was considerable mileage left in scaring people to give you money.

Much of the anticipated ‘rules’ on surviving a horror movie are bandied about and has since been ‘developed’ and much imitated in other movies but Scream doesn’t treat itself too seriously in that respect and only really has some scant references here and there.

MARVEL AT: How many parodies of movies you can spot.
LAUGH WITH: Matthew Lillard’s irritating but ultimately funny demise.
OGLE AT: Rose McGowan (who has never looked more lovelier than here....stick with the blonde hair colouring).
DISDAIN AT: The clumsy romance of Courteney Cox and David Arquette’s characters and the obvious ‘Columbo’-type progression of spotting the killer.

The least silly of the three in the series and certainly the most satisfying.
