Advantages: If silly fart jokes are your thing...
Disadvantages: May not appeal to all, but it's only a film.
Spot - not your average family pet, could be because he is escaped FBI Agent 11, on the run from the Mafia. See sounds silly already? Gordon played by David Arquette,in a role that would have seen Jim Carrey 10 years ago, a somewhat laddish US Mailman, has designs on Stephanie (Leslie Bibb), his neighbour, Mother of James (Angus T Jones)a cute 6 year old. The first 30 minutes introduces the characters in some detail, with Spot getting all of 5 minutes in the frame, with his partner Agent Murdoch (Michael Clarke Duncan), it does at first seem a bit disjointed, but the build up is required. Gordon's daily routine includes an ongoing battle with the resident dogs in Bleeker Street, making him have more than a little distaste for the canine breed. Stephanie, a single Mum, dating a policeman, needs someone to look after James for 10 minutes, just until the Baby sitter arrives, Gordon willing to do anything for the leggy blonde,(if she's had kids then she must have looked like a pipecleaner with a knot in it!)comes to the rescue. James and Gordon have a slow but steady bonding, with perhaps the bran flakes and prunes scene breaking the ice ! Spot meanwhile needs a place to hideout, and just happens to find a certain mailman's van....so the 'tail' begins. Gordon has never been responsible for anything let alone a form of life, and the ensuing chaos will have the kids chuckling and the adults smirking, especially with the amount of innuendos. The real belly laughs are available to all in the form of farts, encounters with dog poo, and an interesting trip to a petshop, which is so silly but well timed it hits the giggle spot. A well written comedy script giving Leslie Bibb a horrendous chain of events to deal with, including a zebra thats eaten far too many beans, dressed all the time in cream outfit,(no not the zebra..) how she kept her face straight I'll never know. Thi
s film is a 'crossbreed' of Beethoven/ Turner and Hooch. It's funny, sloppy, silly, gentle and chaotic. I recommend it to kids big and little, it's not a classic comedy, its a good light hearted family film with thee odd expletive here and there.

- 29/05/01 sounds like a film that adults like myself shouldn't admit to liking but secretly do. Good opinion. |
