I have a bit of a weakness for period dramas - the costumes, the romance, the big houses. There's something very British about it all and never more so than when Jane Austin has had a hand in it. This excellent version of Sense and Sensibility owes a lot to strong direction from Ang Lee coupled with a skillfully devised script from Emma Thompson. The Plot: The Dashwood fmaily are beset with problems - the death fo the father leaves the mother and three unmarried daughters homeless and with very little money - the father's estate defaulting to his brother. Sense and Sensibility is one of Jane Austen's most popular novel so it was only matter of time before it was made into a blockbuster hit, and who better to assist in this task than Emma Thompson, star of many classics such as Shakespeares Much ado About Nothing and Remains of the Day with Anthony Hopkins. When you study novels such as "Sense and Sensibility" at A level, you cannot help but have a critical viewpoint when watching the film version. Yet Ang Lee's production, added to Emma Thompson's adapted screenplay, "Sense and Sensibility" is nothing short of a masterpiece, and one that is somewhat overlooked by a particular age group who are obsessed with third rate unoriginal horror films or highschool comedies. I myself dont count period dramas among my favourite genres and yet "S&S" initially surprised me in being a highly likeable and truly humorous film.
