Advantages: Gritty and well filmed

I initially watched this under protest the other night as I'm not really a big fan of Westerns but in the end I'm glad that I did as it was an excellent film and one that I would definately recommended which is no mean feat as I rank westerns alongside sci fi as a genre I'm luke warm to at best.

The film stars Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan, Neeson plays a character called Carver, he has a vengeful streak in him and the man in his sights is called Gideon (Brosnan) and he will go to any length to track him down through some absolutely beautiful snow covered landscapes. The film actually opens with Gideon getting shot by Carver and tumbling into a fast flowing river and ultimately over a waterfall. Gideon survives and Carver along with his posse is relentless in his persuit of the man however Gideon is able to fight back as the action moves from snow capped landscape to harsh desert.

This is a clever bit of film making and one that is visually impressive as it makes full use of the different climates and scenery in the film. The story is mainly about the obsession that drives Carver along, it is not a straight forward western in any real sense as it has some real depth to it with the two lead characters.

The acting in this film is really good from the two main characters, arguably this is probably the best role I have seen Brosnan in after the rather poor showing in the Bond movies and other fluffy action films, Neeson has always been god quality and he delivers a powerful performance in this film as well.

This film was a nice surprise for me as I expected that I would not enjoy it and ended up finding it engrossing and well worth the time spent watching it. Certainly one to look out for.

Summary: Good western
