Serial Mom (DVD) ... released 30 June, 2003 at Pathe Distribution / Features of the DVD: Full Screen, PAL / In Serial Mom director John Waters creates a wickedly funny--and nasty--comedy starring Kathleen Turner as the ultimate suburbanite: a woman so obsessed with suburban perfection that she kills a neighbour for not separating her recyclables. Hubby Sam Waterston and kids Matthew Lillard and Ricki Lake don't have a clue that in fact it is squeaky-clean mom who is the killer at large in their Baltimore neighbourhood and who has murdered, among others, the guy who dumped her daughter. The final courtroom scene is a riot, turning her into a celebrity defendant (long before OJ Simpson) and featuring a terrific cameo by Patty Hearst (yes, that Patty Hearst). Not for the squeamish or the easily offended, Waters' fans will find him in classic form. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

... why. It was never meant to be a serious movie, but a movie to be shocked and have a laugh at. Which I certainly did, and I do each and every time I watch it. ****** The Plot ****** Its starts out a normal family day, the Sutphin family are all sitting round the breakfast table and the police knock at the door. It appears that poor Dotty Hinkle (Mink Stole) a women in there neighbour hood is being harassed by obscene phone calls and letters. Now who would do a thing like that? No one would ever suspect Beverly (K...more

Does Home Sweet Home really exist - not in this neigbourhood! Serial Mom. How very American. How very funny. I've seen many John Waters films, some which have really made me laugh, some which have really made feel ill (Pink Flamingo!). But Serial Mom is one of his best for general viewing. Kathleen Turner takes, what I think, is one of her best roles as the ever-so-domestic wife and mother. I can't ruin the story by telling you that she is the killer - the title kind of gives that away. And there are certainly enough murders to satisfy anyones cravings. This is a very dark comedy. You will laugh, but you may well be disgusted ...  Read the complete review

John Waters directs this off the map satirical view of the all American, picture perfect, Brady Bunch type middle class family, which he also wrote. Waters has such a unique view of things, that when we sit down to watch his offerings, we are presented with something we have never seen before, and when we finish, we aren’t sure that we want to see it again anytime soon. Kathleen Turner stars as Beverley Sutphin, the “perfect” mother and devoted wife. Married to a dentist (Sam Waterston), with two children, social outcast Misty, and horror film fanatic Chip, (Ricki Lake and Mathhew Lilliard), she is caring, loving and popular, but she has a big ...  Read the complete review

****** Serial Mom ****** This film is one of John Waters finest; he takes a normal family and gives them a few interesting twists. Though this film is alittle predictable at times I don't think it matters one bit, as it suits the cast well. My cousin Thomas or Tomsk as I like to call him first showed me this film about 5 years ago, while having a pizza hehe. It really made me laugh at times how cheeky and naughty the mother (Kathleen Turner) is. She leads a normal life, cooking her family their meals, tidying the house hold; she is the world's finest housewife. On the other side to her character you wouldn't ever want to cross her path if she disagrees with ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review I never thought murder could be so funny (555 words)

Serial Mom is a serial killer so different from the norm that you have to laugh out loud. Sure, its got enough gore to satisfy any horror fan, but it also has a nice satiric edge to it, one that will make anyone with a dark sense of humor laugh. Taking a stab (sorry, couldn't resist) at the golden age of television, you have Beverly Sutphin (Kathleen Turner), who appears to be a nice mother on the surface but inside is a completely deranged serial killer. The motives for her crimes are silly breakings of social convention (cutting people off in the parking lot of Jo-Anne's fabric, standing a girl up at a flea market, eating chicken, wearing white shoes ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Serial Mom (DVD): Chickenlovers WATCH OUT! (282 words)

Serial Mom is a hilarious film directed by John Waters. Kathleen Turner is Beverley Sutphin, who at first sight seems relatively harmless and good mother and wife. She is married to Sam Waterston, and has two children, Misty, and Chip, (Ricki Lake and Matthew Lilliard). Both kids are pretty strange and social rejects. Beverley is kind, nice and popular- and by the way she's also a serial killer. She's not the typical murderer but just takes things to extreme. She punishes people who she see's as 'doing wrong'. Of course this isn't a slasher flick it's more of a comedy. Funny moments include when she makes nuisance phonecalls ...  Read the complete review
