Seven Years in Tibet tells the story of a man and his tranformation. In 1939 Heinrich Harrer (Brad Pitt) leaves his pregnant wife behind in Austria to go on an expedition to the Himalayas.
When the war begins, the native Austrian is taken prisoner by the British and spends some time in a prison camp. Eventually, he manages to flee as does Peter Aufshneiter, former expedition leader and something like Harrer's pet hate.
Harrer manages to make it to Tibet and there meets the young Dalai Lama.

Throughout the story Harrer changes. He starts off a pretentious, cocksure man fleeing from responsibility. Politically he is close to Hitler's National Socialists. In the course of events, Harrer is tranformed. He finds friendship and his own "vocation".

Apart from Harrer's personal story, the film tells the story of Tibet and its struggle against Communist China. I don't know if everything was historically correct though.

Next to a - to my mind - brilliant performance by Brad Pitt and David Thewlis (as Peter Aufshnaiter), there are absolutely stunning pictures of the scenery to be admired! Both Brad Pitt and David Thewlis are doing a rather good job on the accent without becoming annoying and unintelligible. It made me smile, as it doesn't sound 100% a German (or Austrian for that matter) accent but then again - who would want to listen to a broad Austrian/German accent for about 129 minutes anyway. *goosebumps* Leave that to Schwarzenegger!

Of course, Brad Pitt is gorgeous but I still think the film shows more than traces of acting talent.

Yes, I know what you mean. It's the old familiarity breeds contempt problem: I can't stand the sound of a Portsmouth accent myself - being from that area means I have to listen to it whenever I return home. But luckily there aren't many films made with a Portsmouth flavour!
