Advantages: This is quality television at its best.

Disadvantages: Some episodes will make you cry :-(

Season four is where life gets a little deeper for these Manahttan ladies... things are starting to change from light and breezy multiple dating, to more serious matters of marriage, babies, aging, and death. On a lighter note, there are cameos from Lucy Lui and Heidi Klum.

Carrie turns 35, which is pretty unusual for a single, female character in a popular American TV show. SATC is brave enough to admit that, much as we like talking about being independent, and loving our single lives, there are moments when being part of a couple would be nicer than going home alone. Luckily Carrie has her three wonderful girl friends, her gay husband Stanford, and Mr Big, who has been relegated from "love interest" to "friend." Of course, the chemistry is still there...

This is a big season for Carrie, as she is haunted by memories of Aidan until she wins him back... and while they are happy for a while, Big is a part of her life, and she can't let him go completely. Aidan wants to marry her but in the end, he cannot trust her. (And knowing what we know now about how she and Big end up, he was very wise not to.) So Carrie is single again, and possibly homeless - time to grow up and find a down payment, somehow.

There are some laughs in this rather serious season - Aidan and Big finally get down and dirty with a wrestling match (to which Carrie helplessly cries "Stop! You're middle aged!") and her catwalk debut is marred by a very Carrie-like fall. She also fulfils a lifelong dream by visiting the magic grotto that is the Vogue wardrobe.

Samantha begins the season in rare form, working her way through several taboos. Priest? Yes please. Lesbian? Alright then. She finds out just how tough it is to have a relationship with a woman, and finally trades her in for someone more like herself - Richard Wright. Powerful, promiscuous and apparently incapable of being faithful; the one time that Smantha allows herself to be vulnerable to a man, all her fears come true.

Charlotte has left behind her old life of trying to find the perftect guy - now she is married to her own Prince Charming. However, she already knows he is not as perfect as she once thought, and as her wish for children seems to drift further out of reach, she has some tough questions for herself. After leaving a promising career in the hope of having babies, she is faced with having to start all over agin.

Miranda has the most comical dating disasters, all to do with butts and bodily functions, it seems. But things take a more sombre tone when she has to face her mother's death, and the decision about an unexpected pregnancy. She also has to be a support to Steve when he discovers he has cancer. (Of course, in a show like this, it had to be testicular.)

The final episode is entitled "I heart new York". SATC is a love letter to the Big Apple in every season, but this episode (written prior to 9/11) is particularly poignant and moving.

Summary: Another great season from Carrie and co.
