Advantages: Easy to watch
Disadvantages: Basically an extended episode
I thought I'd write a review on Sex And The City from a males point of view. Before any comments are made I was dragged along with my girlfriend and had no choice in the matter! She is a massive fan of Sex And The City and over the years I've been subjected to my fair share of it so while I know the characters and some of the background, there is plenty that I don't know.
From what I can gather, the Sex And The City movie is set a few years after the last episode finishes: Big and Carrie are together and living in New York, Miranda is living in Brooklyn, Samantha is with Smith and Charlotte is with Harry still.
I'm not going go into a great deal of detail about the plot because, quite frankly, there isn't much to talk about! This isn't one of these deep and meaningful films, its just a film about 4 women and their various relationships. What you will basically see is as follows:
Carrie and Big move in together and decide to move in together and get married because it makes sense rather than it being what they want. There is the usual amount of panic you'd expect in this film and of course, nothing ever goes smoothly but I wont say how or why. Needless to say all 4 central characters have their own story lines so the film isn't focused solely on one character so you don't get bored of one character for too long.
In my opinion the film was nothing special and it really dragged on! It is timed at 145 minutes I believe and at times it certainly felt that way. The film itself spans about a year so at times it has to be fairly short in areas where you would perhaps like a bit more detail.
There is the usual "scenes of a sexual nature" and this is probably the reason why the film is rated 15. I defiantly think that the series is for worse both in terms of what you see and the language used. In either case I don't think its excessive or unnecessary.
Performance's by the cast were, as far as I could tell, more or less exactly the same as in the series. To be honest it will be hard for any of these women to get another acting job where they wont be thought of as "that one off Sex And The City."
There is no doubt this film is purely aimed at women! I went on the opening night and the cinema was at least 90% women. This, obviously, meant that there was a ridiculous amount of "oooohhh's" and "aaahhh's" which got quite frustrating at times. I'm a person who wishes people would just shut up in the cinema!
So, as a bloke what did I think? It was ok. There is no way I'd go watch it again even though my girlfriend has now seen it twice. I wasn't moaning too much throughout the film and it was fairly simple to watch. Overall, it wasn't as painful as I thought!
Summary: Not as bad as I expected
