Advantages: Funny, touching, double episode length !!
Disadvantages: Those women who love that certain characters haven't 'sold out' to love will be disappointed.
This was always going to be a controversial concept amongst fans, that is making a film of the series once the series had ended because there are those who were quite content with the ending of the series and the direction of the 'lives' of the four women, Charlotte, Miranda, Carrie and Samantha without the need to carry on and make a film about things our imagination had already dealt with. However, I was one of those who loved the idea of a SATC film, just to see if they really did live happily ever after.
So, where we left off at the end of the series was Charlotte and her husband Harry adopt a little girl called Lily, Miranda and Steve were happy living together with their son Brady, Carrie and Mr.Big ( John as we found out in the last episode ) had finally made the committment to be together and Samantha was as in love with the gorgeous Smith as much as ever. The main storylines in this movie are Carrie's non-event wedding to Big, Charlotte's pregnancy, Miranda's heartbreak at a failing relationship and betrayal and Samantha's realisation that she needs to think about herself first and fet back to being Samantha, not Smith's partner and manager.
Some people I have spoken to were really disappointed with the film however, but perhaps they take SATC far too seriously ( I have a friend who loved the show for highlighting independence in the modern women for example ) but you know what ? It's just entertainment and let's remember that these women are now different women/characters than they were in the early days, they have loved, lived and learnt and I think it would be unrealistic to presume that none of them ( even Carrie or Samantha to an extent ) would ever want any level of committment and stability. I think some people were disappointed in how Carrie's and Samantha's life continued, i.e Carrie wanting marriage and commitment and Samantha putting any man in her life before herself, but why are people so annoyed ? Samantha for example does realise that she needs to be numero uno again in her life, but merely waited so long to realise it and act upon it out of her love for Smith. Jeez, what a crime. They're not perfect role models for the modern woman, they're just as messed up and confused as anyone and want different things at different times of their lives.
There are some just hilarious moments in the film, my favourite probably involve Samantha's dog and Charlotte's embarassing body fuction for example. There's also some really sad parts that involve the aftermath of Big standing Carrie up at the alter, the breakdown of Steve and Miranda's relationship, the near breakdown of Miranda's and Carrie's relationship and of course the moment Samantha tells Smith that it's over. It's a typical SATC episode but longer and more intense. I for one, am hoping for a second movie !!
Summary: All in all, a great film providing a mixture of laughter and sorrow throughout the whole time !!
