Advantages: Samuel L Jackson
Disadvantages: not much in the way of plot twists
Still the man, damn right. What a silly yet strangely enjoyable film. John Shaft is tough, uncompromising black cop. Christian Bale plays nasty racist white man, Walter Wade Junior, who kills innocent black kid for no apparent reason (other than black kid made Wade look like a fool in front of his rich pals). Shaft arrests Wade and then breaks his nose, Wade procedes to jump bail and flees to Switzerland. Cut to classy "Two years later" shot and we're back with Shaft. He's still tough, he's still uncompromising and yes he's still a lover to all the ladies, damn right. Gets wind that Wade is about to come back cos he reckons he can get off with the murder (daddy's rich, has contacts and the only witness has vanished and is unwilling to testify anyway). Film now moves into "killing" mode. Shaft kills about twenty bad guys, no questions asked. Once again bad guys suffer from "Imperial Stormtrooper Syndrome" i.e. couldn't hit the side of a barn from ten paces. Meanwhile Shaft is a better shot than , well something that's a really good shot. This looks and sounds good, but is certainly daft. Is there anyone cooler than Samuel L Jackson??

- 17/04/02 its not that good a film in my opinion. the idea is good and SLJ plays the part well its just the action isn't really that thrilling and the storyline and direction seems a little bit movie of the week style. plus shaft is supposed to be a sex machine and be pleasing the ' booty ' but there is hardly any evidence of this. more gratuitous sex please. |
