Advantages: funny
Disadvantages: social setting won't appeal to all
This is a rom-com with a difference, as it's set in the 1500s and follows a young William Shakespeare as he both falls in love and writes his plays. Starring Joseph Fiennes as the Bard and Gwyneth Paltrow as his womany inspiration, it's an enjoyable comedy with a difference.
In the sense that the plot revolves around Shakespeare and his times, there are some who won't find this appealing. However, those interested in the writer will enjoy the references and semi-serious biographical content of the film. There are lots of in jokes that you will only get if you understand his work, but there's nothing wrong with that either.
At 123 minutes this is a long old film, but I never felt it dropped pace as there was both historical drama and comedy and romance taking place - something for everyone.
The acting is solid throughout, and Platrow shines through in particular. It's a funny old thing, but I've never given her much respect as an actress yet she does do a very good job in this film.
Half the fun is the Shakespearean references and jokes which work better for those who are familiar with his work. In fact, it's quite a good resource to use in school, although there are some sex scenes that are too racy for children!
All in all, this is a nice rom com with a touch of intelligence through its subject matter: I recommend it!
Summary: do it
