Advantages: Really Funny, Top Plot, Good Actors, Amazing Price
Disadvantages: None
Shaun of the Dead currently costs just £2.98 on Amazon so if you don't own it already - now is the time to buy it. In stores you can expect to pay anywhere between £5 and £10 for a copy.
This full length film is basically a spoof of the famous horror film "Dawn of the Dead" and was actually released around the same time the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" was. It stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Rob Brydon, Dylan Moran, Martin Freeman and Lucy Davis who are all brilliant comedy actors and great choices for this film. Lucy Davis plays a very different role here to that of "Dawn" when she starred in the TV comedy series "The Office" and so does Martin Freeman to a point.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost play Shaun and Ed respectively and are similar in some ways to the characters they played on the popular comedy TV series "Spaced". That's not a bad thing though! Shaun is a hilarious typical middle aged bloke who's life is going nowhere and Ed is his "I refuse to ever grow up" best mate. The film is really easy to relate to as it gets off to a quick start and there are loads of little funny moments.
As the horror kicks in later in the film, there are a few good scary parts surprisingly enough though nothing too drastic - hence the certificate 15 label on this. The plot is exceptionally good because you just don't see what's coming round the corner until it's already jumped on you and tried to rip your head off. The way the characters deal with the undead is what really makes this a hilarious comedy and the people who wrote it obviously have brilliant senses of humour.
At this price you really have to buy this if you don't already have it. There are even a few additional bits on the end of the DVD for you to play with when the film's finished. This includes an interesting little feature, a couple of funny Trisha bits (spun off from a sub-plot in the film) and there are some brilliant little recordings done in diary style by some of the cast.
Summary: BUY IT!
