She's The Man (DVD) ... released 24 July, 2006 at Entertainment in Video / Features of the DVD: PAL / Shakespearean comedy and American high school are a match made in heaven--or Hollywood, at any rate. Somehow the exaggerated emotions and budding hormones of adolescence are perfectly suited to Shakespeare's twisty plots, and She's the Man is a perfect example. Viola (Amanda Bynes, What a Girl Wants) is furious when she learns that her high school, Cornwall, has cut the girl's soccer team--so furious that she takes advantage of her twin brother Sebastian (James Kirk, Final Destination 2) skipping town for a few weeks to take his place at his school, Illyria, so she can join the soccer team there. But her disguise as her brother leads to complications when she falls in love with her soccer-playing roommate and the girl he's in love with falls in love with "Sebastian"... Bynes may not be entirely persuasive as a high school boy, but she's got the charm and sprightliness to make the audience follow her anyway. The clever script walks a fine balance, treating the situation realistically enough to make Viola's efforts matter, but zipping along quickly enough that we don't worry too much about the details. As Duke and Olivia--the other two parts of the love triangle--Channing Tatum and Laura Ramsey combine sex appeal with engaging sweetness; the excellent supporting cast includes David Cross (Arrested Development), Julie Hagerty (Airplane! ), and former British soccer star Vinnie Jones (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels). All in all, a delightful bit of fun. --Bret Fetzer

Premium Review She's The Man (DVD): She's a He?? (242 words)

Rating:

Plot: Girl is good at football, girl wants to play football but the school won't have it, girl dresses up as her brother, everyone lives happily ever after. Sounds awful doesn't it? Well it's not. Opinion: She's the man manages what very few comedy films manage these days, it manages to be genuinely funny. Amanda Bynes has a wonderful ability to manipulate her face into an array of expressions which really show her characters confusion and dismay at what is happening. The film focuses quite heavily on stereotypes, it was originally a Shakespeare play after all, with the girls being dim but pretty, and the guys macho and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Girls v Boys - who will win? (182 words)

A great modern day movie based on the Shakesperian Twelth Night, a girl (Amanda Bynes) tries to carry on playing football, as her school has cut the girls football team, by taking her brother's place in Illyria (the school) by disguising herself as him. This funny, laugh out loud film contains names from Twelth Night and roughly the same plot but with todays modern entertaining values, like girls showing off their skills! This mix of modern and old drama strangely works for all ages. I must admit that I have watched it many many a time, but the jokes just don't get boring. The film follows Amanda Bynes as she strives to play her game ...  Read the complete review

When i saw the trailers in the cinema for this film, i thought that the film in general looked quite funny but i was a little bit put off by the fact that Amanda Bynes was in it. I have never really warmed properly to her as an actress and theres something about her that kind of irritates me but i thought i would give the film a go anyway. If you have never heard of She's The Man, it is an American romantic comedy film that came to our screens in 2006. It is directed by Andy Fickman and the running time is 105 minutes long altogether. The story centres around character Viola who loves playing soccer at her school but the girls team ends ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Well she don't really look like a man.. (595 words)

Viola is a keen football player who wants to 'make it' the same as boys do in the sport. However society doesn't allow it and girls can't do what men do can they? Unfortunately for her the all girls team she played for was cut, but this wasn't going to settle very well with her and she had other ideas. Viola however wants to prove people wrong about girls not being able to play and when her brother Sebastian jets off to London for a few days she has a plan. She disguises herself as her older brother and joins the high school soccer/football team - which is of course all boys! It's not all hunky dory though as not only does Viola (Amanda Byrnes) ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review She's The Man (DVD): Is it a girl or boy? (760 words)

I recently watched she's the man for the hundredth time and therefore thought it was about time I reviewed it. She's the man is a chick flick comedy film aimed at a relatively young audience. It was originally out in 2006 in the cinema and then the same year out on DVD. I went to see it at the cinema and bought the DVD as soon as it was out. The main storyline of She's The Man is based on the Shakespeare play Twelfth Night, which is what quite a few teenage chick flicks seem to have done. This has been done well though and even many of the characters have the same names as those in the play. I think it really demonstrates how versatile Shakespeare's stories ...  Read the complete review
